Lakeland Village, California: A shooting along the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane has left a deputy from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department dead, and the shooting suspect was shot and hospitalized on Friday, January 13th, 2023.

The deputy has been identified by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department as Deputy Darnell Calhoun.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Chad Bianco said during a press conference moments ago, “Tell of a lost of another one our own deputy sheriff who was killed in the line of duty today well answering a call for service involving domestic violence and child custody type of a call. Deputy Darnell Calhoun was 30 years old and began his law enforcement career in the City of San Diego Police Department. He served 2 years there before lateraling to us (Riverside County Sheriff’s) in February (2022). He was assigned to the Lake Elsinore Station. He’s a husband, a son… he would’ve been a dad.”

Riverside County Sheriff’s Chad Bianco then provided the latest information regarding what lead up to the shooting, saying during a press conference moments ago, “At 4:20 this afternoon (Friday), dispatchers received a call of an unknown trouble; there were voices heard in the background… sounded like there could possibly be a struggle. Deputies responded to the scene. Once there, Deputy Calhoun was the first to arrive. At this point we are not really sure of the circumstances surrounding the initial contact. The second deputy arriving found our deputy wounded in the street, and a gun fight between the suspect and that deputy ensued. The suspect was hit; he was treated at the scene and he was transported to the hospital; he’s currently in critical condition. At this point that’s all I could tell you about the call.”
