Barstow, California: Officers from the Barstow Police Department have arrested a local man arrested felony evading, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, assault with a deadly weapon on peace officer, and felony vandalism during early morning on Thursday, January 5th, 2023.

According to a press release from the Barstow Police Department, at approximately 5:00 a.m. PT, Barstow Police Service Dog Boyke began barking from his marked police unit alerting officers to the rear of the police department. Officers checked on K9 Boyke and observed that a vehicle had gained access to the secured area of the police department. Officers also saw that the lower back security gate to the police department was broken and lying on the ground. Officers immediately tried to stop the vehicle but the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Barstow resident, Phillip Tafoya, failed to follow their commands and fled from the rear lot to Belinda Street. Barstow Police officers pursued Tafoya with their emergency red lights and siren, but he failed to yield.

Tafoya led officers on a slow speed pursuit throughout the city stopping periodically; however, when officers would start to approach and attempt to talk Tafoya, he would drive off again. During the pursuit, Tafoya swerved several times towards officers intentionally trying to hit them with his vehicle. Tafoya then drove back to the area of the police department on Belinda Street near Mountain View Street and stopped. Barstow Police Corporal Monty Franklin verbally communicated with Tafoya for approximately thirty minutes and was able to convince Tafoya to exit his vehicle and surrender without further incident.

Officers placed Tafoya under arrest and as they did, they observed objective signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Further investigation revealed Tafoya used his vehicle to ram the Police Department’s security gate to gain access to the rear lot.

Phillip Tafoya was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Jail for CVC 2800.2 – Felony Evading, CVC 23152(f) – Driving Under the Influence a Controlled Substance, PC 245(c) – ADW on Peace Officer, and PC 594(b)(1) – Felony Vandalism.

Great work to the Barstow Police Department.
