Rubidoux, California: A deputy from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department was fatally shot by a suspect during the afternoon on Thursday, December 29th, 2022.

According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the deputy attempted to pull over a driver during a traffic stop at around 2:00 p.m. PT along the 3900 block of Golden West Avenue, and as he approached the vehicle, the suspect pointed a gun and shot the deputy.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department later confirmed the identity of the deputy as 32 year old Isaiah Cordero, who had been with the sheriff’s department since 2014.

“He was a jokester around the station and all of our deputies considered him their little brother,” said Sheriff Chad Bianco.

Authorities identified the gunman as 44 year old William Shae McKay, who had an “extensive criminal history” and “violent past” which included charges of kidnapping, robbery and multiple assaults, including the stabbing of a California Highway Patrol K-9.

A manhunt was on for the suspect, and authorities located the suspect inside a vehicle.

The suspect inside a pickup truck LED multiple authorities on a police pursuit over several freeways in Riverside County, California; dozens of law enforcement vehicles following the pickup truck close behind as the suspect speeding at around 45-50 mph along California State Route 60 then onto Interstate 15.

The police pursuit came to an end along southbound Interstate 15 just underneath the 5th Street overpass in Norco, California with the pickup truck up onto the shoulder of the freeway and was pinned on the embankment by a law enforcement bearcat.

The suspect was apparently killed after at least two shots were fired through the front windshield of the pickup truck.

Southbound Interstate 15 was closed as the investigation into the shooting.
