Breaking News: Barstow, CA: Local woman arrested for attempted murder, assault with deadly weapon, and felon in possession of firearm following shots fired near Barstow High School.

Barstow, California: Officers from the Barstow Police Department have arrested a local woman for attempted murder, assault with deadly weapon, and felon in possession of firearm following shots fired near Barstow High School that occurred on Thursday, October 6th, 2022.

According to a new earlier press release a few minutes ago from the Barstow Police Department, at 9:00 a.m. (PT) on Thursday, October 6th, 2022, School Resource Officer Brian Pena broadcasted via radio that shots had just been fired near Barstow High School.

He immediately put the school on lockdown and broadcasted suspect information.

All police department units responded to the scene along with members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Officer Pena broadcasted that he observed a female with a gun on Mt. Vernon Street.

He provided a description of the female and advised that she was getting into a green compact vehicle that was now travelling south on Mt. Vernon Street.

Barstow Police Detectives and Officers located the vehicle at the top of Mt. Vernon Street and one of the officers observed the female throw a gun out of the passenger side window of the vehicle.

The officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and detained the male driver and female passenger.

As this was occurring additional officers set a perimeter around the entire high school.

Officer Pena and additional officers at the scene quickly began working with and communicating with the BHS Principal Dr. Jimenez and Superintendent Jeff Malan.

The Barstow STEM Academy was also placed in a lockdown status.

According to the Barstow Police Department, the shooting investigation revealed that the female, Elizabeth Swenson (age 33) of Barstow, was in an argument with her boyfriend as they drove down Mt. View Street.

When he turned onto Mt. Vernon Street, Swenson stepped out of the vehicle, pulled a gun from her waistband, and shot one round at her boyfriend.

After the shot the argument continued but she got back into the car and they travelled south on Mt. Vernon when officers intercepted them.

The school remained in lockdown as evidence technicians and detectives processed the scene of the shooting, canvassed the area, and interviewed the witnesses.

Barstow High School and Barstow STEM Academy were taken out of lockdown status at 10:00 AM.

Sergeant Jose Barrientos and several officers remained at Barstow High School to provide information and answer any questions for parents and staff.

Detectives processed the scene where the traffic stop was initiated and collected the firearm.

They also collected CCTV surveillance video that captured the shooting incident.

The male subject was determined to be the victim in this case and was released from the Barstow Police Department.

Elizabeth Swenson is being booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department High Desert Detention Center for PC 664/187 – Attempted Murder, PC 245(a)(2) –Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and PC 29800 – Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
