San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “Good afternoon everyone, I’m Shannon Dicus, the Sheriff of San Bernardino County – that’s S.h.a.n.n.o.n. D.i.c.u.s. – I’m hear to brief you on an officer involved shooting that occurred earlier today as of result of an Amber Alert that was put out by Fontana P.D. related to a homicide. The suspect in this case is believe to be Anthony John Graziano, and he was considered to be armed and dangerous as of result of that case and homicide that occurred yesterday, and it was also believed he was with his 15-year-old daughter Savannah Graziano. This resulted in an Amber Alert by Fontana P.D. and was transferred out through the California Highway Patrol. As result of that Amber Alert, at 10:25 this morning, a citizen called into our dispatch center and related that they thought they saw his suspect’s vehicle which was contained in the Amber Alert that I described earlier. Barstow deputies were dispatched to the area of Highway 395 and Highway 58 where the vehicle was seen, and as the deputies arrived they encounter the suspect’s vehicle, a pursuit ensues and as result of that pursuit, the suspect immediately starts firing at our deputies putting several rounds through the windshield of the petrole unit. The pursuit continued on Highway 58 to I-15 in the area of Lynnwood where a second unit is involved. The suspect firing back at our deputies the entire time, and in which time the suspect ends up shooting the second pursuing vehicle causing the vehicle to become disabled. The pursuit continued down I-15 towards the Victorville/Hesperia area constantly fir… shooting back at the deputies during that period of time. As they get into the area of Main Street and what we’re talking about is the southwest corner of Main where it intersects the I-15, it appears that the suspect goes off-road. Several jurisdictions at this time are involved in the pursuit, and the deputies attempted to contain the suspect in the triangle that’s made by the off-ramp; the I-15 Freeway and the Main Street bridge that goes over the top. As of result of that, a fire fight ensues. During that fire fight, the suspect’s vehicle comes to rest, at which time a subject exits the passenger side of the vehicle wearing tactical gear. That subject starts to run towards Sheriff’s deputies, and during the gunfire goes down. Sheriff’s deputies immediately go to clear the vehicle so they can clear the vehicle, make it safe, and render medical aid. At which time, they contacted the subject wearing the tactical gear, and we believe both the suspect in the vehicle and the person that’s contacted with the tactical gear, that that person is our 15-year-old juvenile, of Savannah. The suspect, we believe is Graziano in the driver’s seat of the car. This all still needs to be confirmed and is preliminary information, and we will confirm it through the corners office, but as the deputies render medical aid and realized that this is Savannah in the tactical gear, they immediately transport her to an area… a local area hospital. At 1152 hours, Savannah is pronounced decease. This investigation is going to take at least 24 hours before we’re able to provide you with more information as to what happened and exactly the circumstances are as it relates to the officer involved situation, but at this time both Anthony Graziano and Savannah are deceased.”

When asked how did the girl get away during the shootout, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said “We didn’t know it was a girl initial wearing tactical gear, this is in the middle of a fire fight.”

When asked the shooting back and forth with Mrs Graziano, was she’s in the middle of that, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “There may… preliminary again, there may be some indications that the passenger of the vehicle, which we believe is Savannah, may have been also involved in the fire exchange.”

When asked what do you mean by that “which we believe is Savannah, may have been also involved in the fire fight” and what information do you have, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “There may be some information that the passenger was involved in the firing back at the deputies, and we’re still trying to confirmed that at this point.”

When asked if he believe it’s true, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “We don’t know; it’s so early in this investigation folks. This is highly complex – it covers as you can imagine the number of miles coming out from Highway 58 and 395, all the way down from the Barstow area, coming back here; very substantial investigation, multiple scenes in terms of shootings occurred and ultimately ending up out here.”

When asked if any of the deputies involved or any of their patrol vehicles have video cameras, body cam video or anything like that, are they checking those, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “Yes, we’re analyzing that; where the video came from or from the airship above it that were actually above the pursuit itself.”

When asked you got ground and air, were you tracking it the whole way, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “We got… in the area just outside of Barstow is when the aircraft is able to get over them and we do have videos from the aircraft.”

When asked if he can confirm that the 15-year-old girl was in tactical gear or are you not sure about that at this time, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “No, I’m confirming that the 15-year-old girl was in there. As far as her identity, officially that goes to the coroner’s office. Preliminary, does seem or does appear to be her.”

When asked if the person wearing the tactical gear that was coming at deputies, did they have a weapon on them, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “At this time, I don’t have that information. I’m not sure; we’re still reviewing the entire scene.”

When asked if there was multiple weapons found inside the vehicle with the suspect, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “The only weapon we were able to confirm right now is a rifle, taken from the suspect’s vehicle.”

When that’s how many times the girl was struck by gunfire, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “We don’t know. There are numerous Sheriff’s units that were struck as of result of the pursuit and also in the area where everything ultimately comes to an end.”

When asked any identification on the rifle that the suspect may have used, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “Not at this point.”

When asked during the continuing shooting back and forth, was it a semi-automatic rifle, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “It’s being described to me as an A.R. type rifle but I haven’t confirmed that yet.”

When asked were your deputies returning fire, was this a rolling gun fight between the deputies and the suspect, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “It’s my understanding that most of the fire was returned happened out here at the scene. There may have been some returns at the Barstow area but I don’t know at this point for sure.”

When asked what weapons were found at the scene, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “There is a rifle found at the scene. What type is it, I’m just being told it may be an A.R. type rifle but I haven’t confirmed; this is all preliminary at this time.”

When asked inside of the truck that the weapon was found, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “Inside of the truck.”

When asked if there was any weapons found outside of the truck or on the second person (the 15-year-old girl), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “At this point, I don’t know what the crime scene looks like; I haven’t… I haven’t receive that information.”

When asked if there’s the possibility of a second weapon involved, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “At this point, I don’t know that. I have to find out what the investigators actually bring back as of result… it’s a substantial crime scene.”

When asked can you describe what the second person, the female’s body armor look like, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “It looked like what we considered a plate carrier on the front of the person, and also a tactical helmet.”

When asked sold the female was wearing body armor with trauma plates in front, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “It sounds like the trauma plates itself… what it’s being described to me and again preliminary, and a tactical type of helmet.”

When asked about the chase between Barstow and Hesperia on the freeway, did the sheriff’s department have command of the situation the whole time or was it a back and forth between command with C.H.P.,  San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “No, we… initially we were the ones who engage the suspect a d continued that all the way to the termination point.”

When asked if the shooting came from the suspect’s driver side, passenger side or both sides of the vehicle, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “We won’t know that for hours. We won’t know that for hours folks and we’ll get back to you.”

When asked if the sheriff helicopter fired onto the vehicle during the pursuit, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “No, it did not.”

When asked if any deputies were injured during the gun fights, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “At this point, we do have one deputy I was injured as far as shrapnel that they received to their face during the fire fight.”

When asked what it is being described to you, was the girl running towards deputies or away from the vehicle, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “It was described as running towards deputies.”

When asked the condition of the deputy that was injured, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “The deputy is stable.”

When asked was the deputy inside the vehicle or outside when got injured, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “I’m not sure at this point.”

When asked what was the relationship between the suspect and the girl who was being considered by authorities as a kidnapped/abducted victim, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Shannon Dicus said, “I don’t know if we’re going to know that at this point, I’ll kind of finished this off with your question is that we’re going to have to compare notes between the investigators in Fontana based on the original scene and of course what happened here, and it’s my hope we’ll be able to fill you in with the things we don’t know yet so thank you all very much.”
