Needles, California: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station Sergeant Nick Caronna has received the Medal of Valor Award for helping a man escape an early morning house fire in October 2020.

According to a press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, “On October 17, 2020, Sergeant Nick Caronna from the Colorado River Station responded to a house fire in the city of Needles. When Caronna arrived, he determined the house had not been cleared. Caronna knocked on the front door several times and after not receiving a response, forced the door open. By now the fire had engulfed the entire rear of the home. Caronna’s visibility was hindered by thick smoke and intense heat. He called out several times with no response. Caronna crawled on the floor to a bedroom and saw a leg on a bed. Caronna reached up and pulled the leg towards him. Believing the victim had already succumbed to smoke inhalation, he was surprised when he heard the person yell. Caronna helped the man out of the house, where he was immediately treated for smoke inhalation. Soon after exiting, the entire home was engulfed in flames.”
