Downey, California: The Monterey Park Police Department have released the identity of their off-duty officer who was shot and killed in a parking lot at a shopping center on Monday, August 8th, 2022.
According to the Monterey Park Police Department, off-duty police officer has been identified as 26 year old Gardiel Solorio.
Gardiel Solorio grew up in Bell Gardens, California, and attended California State University, Los Angeles where he received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
In July 2022, Gardiel Solorio graduated from the police academy.
The shooting happened around 3:25 p.m. P.T. Monday in a parking lot in front of a gym at the shopping center located at 12070 Lakewood Boulevard.
Responding officers found Gardiel Solorio suffering from gunshot wounds, and paramedics responded and later declared him dead at the scene.
Later that evening on Monday, a possession was held transporting the off-duty police officer to the coroner’s office near Downtown Los Angeles, California.
A line of patrol vehicles and motorcycles drove along freeways and streets as onlookers stood; some even saluting including firefighters as the procession passed underneath a large American flag hanging from 2 ladder fire department trucks.
“He really wanted to make an impact on the community, His classmates shared that Officer Solorio had all the characteristics of a great officer. He was humble, dedicated, selfless and hardworking, but even a better person,” said Monterey Park Police Department Chief Kelly Gordon during a news conference on Tuesday.
Gardiel Solorio is survived by his parents, brothers, sisters and fiancée.
“His family and friends described him as tough as nails but a kid at heart,” said Monterey Park Police Department Chief Kelly Gordon during a news conference on Tuesday.
Authorities are continuing to sear h for a suspect responsible for the killing of the off-duty police officer; saying that they are following several active leads.
“The investigation is rapidly evolving and unfortunately, I cannot share what leads we are currently following up on as we do not want to compromise the investigation,” said Downey Police Department Captain Scott Loughner during a news conference on Tuesday.
