Barstow, CA: Barstow Police Department arrested a local man after hit and run vehicle collision along the 900 block of Armory Road early morning last Saturday with a person who later died.

Barstow, California: The Barstow Police Department have arrested a local man after hit and run vehicle collision along the 900 block of Armory Road on Saturday, July 9th, 2022 with a person who later died.

According to the Barstow Police Department, at approximately 1:25 a.m. PT, Officers Austin Jaramillo and Irwin Islas were patrolling in the area of the 900 block of Armory Road when he located a male lying in the roadway.

Officers Jaramillo and Islas stopped and checked on the subject and found him to be suffering from a major injury to his head.

They immediately administered first aid to the male and requested emergency medical services to respond to the scene.

Barstow Fire Protection District arrived on scene and provided medical aid to the male. Despite all life saving measures, paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

As the officers examined the scene, they observed evidence indicating that the male was the victim of a hit-and-run traffic collision.

Officers located vehicle debris and a particular panel part of the vehicle was at the scene next to the victim.

Detectives from the Barstow Police Department’s Detective Bureau responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Detective Matthew Helms was able to research vehicle parts and debris left at the scene and through his investigation determined that the parts belonged to an older model Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Based on the evidence at the scene, the suspect’s vehicle was a Suzuki Grand Vitara vehicle that had damage and a missing part to the front and driver’s side area.

Officers and detectives began searching the Barstow area for any and all Suzuki Grand Vitara’s with front end damage and missing the specific panel piece.

On July 9, at approximately 5:06 PM, Detective Jose Sanchez located a Suzuki Grand Vitara at a gas station in the 100 block of Montara Road.

The vehicle had front end damage and matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle in the hit-and-run collision.

Detective Sanchez conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 1800 block of Calico Drive. He identified the driver as Reginald Ward, a 52-year-old Barstow resident.

Detectives, Matthew Helms and Austyn Willis interviewed additional witnesses to the collision.

The detectives were able to identify Reginald Ward as the driver of the Suzuki Grand Vitara at the time of the collision with the victim causing his death.

Ward was placed under arrest and he was transported to the Barstow Police Department.

Detectives impounded the Suzuki Grand Vitara as evidence and placed Reginald Ward under arrest.

Ward was interviewed and booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Barstow Jail for PC 192(c)(1) – Vehicular Manslaughter and VC 20001(a) – Hit-and-Run Resulting in Death.
