Downtown Highland Park, Illinois: A deadly shooting has occurred during the 4th Of July Parade held on Monday, July 4th, 2022.
The parade began around 10:00 a.m. CT when 10 minutes later shots were fired upon parade-goers by a man armed with a high power rifle.
Hundreds of parade-goers with some visibly bloodied fled the parade route, leaving behind chairs, baby strollers, plush toys, bicycles and blankets.
According to the Highland Park Police Department, 6 people were killed and 38 people are injured aging from 8 years old to 85 years old in the deadly shooting.
A family reunification center was established at the Highland Park Police Department, located at 1677 Old Deerfield Road.
Law enforcement officials are calling an active shooter situation as officers are searching for a suspect who likely fired on the festivities from a rooftop.
The gun was recovered at the scene, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is urgent tracing it to find the original purchaser of the firearm.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago assisted the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force in Illinois with the search for 22 years old Robert “Bobby” E. Crimo III in his involvement in the deadly shooting.

Mayor of Highland Park Nancy Rotering released the following statement after the deadly shooting saying, “Highland Park Police are responding to an incident in downtown Highland Park. Fourth Fest has been canceled. Please avoid downtown Highland Park. More information will be shared as it becomes available.”
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot released the following statement after the deadly shooting saying, “The tragedy unfolding in Highland Park is devastating. I have been in contact with Mayor Rotering and have offered our support, and the Chicago Police Department is providing assistance. We grieve with the families of the deceased and injured as well as the entire Highland Park community. Law enforcement is working hard to bring the shooter into custody. If anyone has information, we encourage them to call 911 and report what you know.”
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said in a tweet via twitter that he is “closely monitoring the situation in Highland Park” and that Illinois State Police are assisting.
