Mendon, Missouri: Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Passenger Train 4 has crashed into a dump truck and derailed off railroad track on Monday, June 27th, 2022 leaving 3 people dead and multiple people injured.

According to a press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper B, “At approximately 12:43 p.m. today, the Chariton County 911 Center received a 911 call of a vehicle struck by a train on Porche Prairie Avenue in Chariton County, southwest of Mendon, Mo. At approximately 1:02 p.m., first responders began to arrive on scene. Preliminary investigation indicates an Amtrak passenger train traveling to Chicago, Illinois, struck a dump truck at the railroad crossing on Porche Prairie Avenue. The train had approximately 8 cars, including a baggage car. Seven cars have derailed. There are multiple injuries and we can confirm there are 3 fatalities-2 on the train and 1 in the dump truck. Personnel are currently working to secure the scene. The train had approximately 207 passengers and crew members. All injured and uninjured occupants of the train have been transported from the scene. Agencies involved include the Chariton County, Linn County, Macon County, Randolph County Sheriff’s Offices, Brookfield and Macon Police Departments, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri State Park Rangers, Missouri State Fire Marshals, and State Emergency Management Agency. Ambulances from Chariton, Linn, Randolph, Livingston, Macon, Howard, Carroll and Caldwell Counties as well as medical helicopters from multiple service providers responded to the scene. Each agency transported multiple victims to area hospitals. Officials from Amtrak are responding to the scene and the NTSB has been advised.”
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Passenger Train 4 offers service from Los Angeles, California and Chicago, Illinois, including stops at Barstow, California; Needles, California; and Kingman, Arizona.
Reports that Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Passenger Train 4 departed Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, California on Saturday, June 25th, 2022, and made a total of 25 stops for passengers along the way, including 6 stops in California, before the crash and derailment.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas released a brief statement via Twitter regarding the crash and derailment.
“Having relied on Amtrak to cross our state throughout my college years and long after, I remember the ride well. My heart goes out to the passengers and all impacted by today’s event and I extend my thanks to those responding to today’s derailment on the scene and at the hospital,” said Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson had just learned about the derailment when he make an appearance at an event in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday afternoon.
“It’s a terrible situation, I do know that several cars have been derailed. We do believe there could be some fatalities, but again it’s way early on. It’s very unfortunate any time you have a derailment of a train and multiple cars, it’s not a good day,” said Missouri Governor Mike Parson.
