Barstow, CA: Local man arrested for possession of a loaded and unregistered firearm in public after officers were investigating a theft call for service at a business.

Barstow, California: A local man was arrested for possession of a loaded and unregistered firearm in public after officers were investigating a theft call for service at a business on Tuesday, June 21st, 2022.

According to the Barstow Police Department, at about 12:36 pm, Officer Jacob Gatti and Corporal Phillip Ragle were investigating a theft call for service at a business on the 500 block of East Virginia Way.

While on scene, Officer J. Gatti observed a male subject with what appeared to be the silhouette of a firearm on his right hip. Officer J. Gatti advised Corporal Ragle of his observations and the officers attempted to contact the male in the parking lot. The male then entered a nearby business, where the officer were able to talk with him and conduct a pat down search of his person.

The officers identified the male as Darrell Kitchen, a 28-year-old Barstow resident. As Officer Gatti checked Kitchen, he determined that Kitchen no longer had the firearm on him. The officers then talked with the clerk in the business who reported that Kitchen walked into the store and placed an object in the corner of the business.

Officer J. Gatti checked the area pointed out by the clerk and located a loaded 9mm ghost gun on the floor. Officer J. Gatti then reviewed the store’s surveillance video and observed, in the video, Kitchen enter the store and immediately discard the firearm in the business. Officer J. Gatti placed Darrell Kitchen under arrest without incident.

Kitchen was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto for PC 25850(c)(6) – Possession of a Loaded and Unregistered Firearm in Public.
