El Monte, California: The El Monte Police Department confirms 2 officers have died after being shot while responding to an emergency call at the Siesta Inn Motel located along the 10300 block of Garvey Avenue.
The shooting occurred at about 4:47 p.m. PT on Tuesday, June 14th, 2022.
According to the El Monte Police Department, the officers were responding to a possible stabbing at the Siesta Inn and “took gunfire upon arrival.”
Both officers were rushed to LAC-USC Medical Center where they died from their injuries.
During a Tuesday night press conference, El Monte Mayor Jessica Ancona said, “They were acting as a first line of defense for our community members when they were essentially ambushed while trying to keep a family safe.”
According to the El Monte Police Department, a male suspect was also hit by gunfire and died at the scene.
The El Monte Police Department have not released the identities of the officers or the suspect have been identified.
According to the El Monte Police Department, one of the officers was a 22 year veteran of the force, and the second officer had less than a year on the job.
The area of Garvey Avenue between Santa Anita Avenue and Central Avenue is closed due to the ongoing investigation.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have taken over the investigation.
This latest shooting comes less than 24 hours after a California Highway Patrol officer was critically injured after being shot during a traffic stop in Studio City, California.
The suspect in that shooting in Studio City, California has been apprehended.
