Barstow, California: Authorities responded to a report of a suspicious device found near the front of the Stater Brothers grocery store off Armory Road during the evening on Sunday, June 5th, 2022.
According to the Barstow Police Department, at about 6:49 p.m. PT, Officer Michael Carson responded to Stater Brothers grocery store located at 957 Armory Road regarding a suspicious device.
The investigation revealed that someone intentionally placed the device near the entrance of the business and it has the appearance of an explosive device similar to a pipe bomb.
A citizen observed the device and reported to the Stater Brothers grocery store manager that he believed there was a possible explosive device outside of the grocery store.
The manager closed the grocery store and officers assisted with evacuations of the remaining stores in the shopping center until the area could be rendered safe.
Officers notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb and Arson Unit who responded to the scene.
The deputies inspected the device and collected the device for disposal.
Although deputies determined that the device wasn’t explosive in nature, they noted that the device looked like a pipe bomb.
For precautions, deputies transported the suspicious device to the large desert area just east of the Sports Park and detonated the device.
After the device was removed from the located and safely detonated, the grocery store and shopping center was deem safe to return to business.
Officers are investigating this incident to identify who placed the device at the location.
