Pleasanton, California: John Madden, legendary football coach, broadcaster and video game icon, has died on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021.

According to National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell, “Earlier today we received the sad news that the great John Madden died unexpectedly this morning. He was 85. On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families.”

John Madden worked his way up the Raiders organization before serving as the head coach from 1969 to 1978, and won a Super Bowl as coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1976.

Afterwards, John Madden went on to be a commentator for CBS, FOX, ABC and NBC.

John Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and was the winner of 16 Emmy awards for his broadcasting.

John Madden’s name would be recognized by many young people with the “Madden” video games.

“We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today,” said National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell.

John Madden lived in Pleasanton, California during retirement and until his final days.

John Madden was 85, and is survived by his wife Virginia and two sons, Joseph and Michael.

At this moment, details on memorial service for John Madden haven’t been announced.
