Brunswick, Georgia: A jury has found three men guilty of murder in fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery.

The jury in the case against three white men charged with murder in the death of 25 year old Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man, returned with a verdict in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 24th, 2021.

Back in February 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was chased by the men in vehicles through a Brunswick neighborhood, and shot and killed by the younger McMichael.

For Travis McMichael, the man who fired the shots that killed Ahmaud Arbery, the jury found him guilty on all counts: malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony.

For Gregory McMichael, a former investigator, the jury found him guilty of all charges except malice murder, and the jury found him guilty on the following charges: four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony.

For William “Roddie” Bryan, the man officials said who recorded the viral video showing Ahmaud Arbery’s final moments, the jury found him guilty on three counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony.

The three men face minimum sentences of life in prison, and it’s up to the judge to decide whether that comes with or without the possibility of parole.

Well Travis McMichael stood for the guilty verdict as his lawyer’s arm around his shoulder, and at one point, Travis McMichael was seen lowering his head to his chest.

After the guilty verdicts were read, Travis McMichael was seen lowering his head to his chest, and well leaving the courtroom mouthed “love you” to his mother who was also inside the courtroom.

As the judge read the first guilty verdict aloud, Arbery’s mother Wanda Cooper-Jones sobbed aloud: “Oh!” and wept as the Rev. Al Sharpton held her hand well at the same moment Arbery’s father Marcus Arbery leaped up and cheered.

The judge asked sheriff’s deputies to remove Marcus Arbery from the courtroom for the outburst.

As he left the room, Marcus Arbery was heard saying, “It’s been a long time coming.”

Later, Marcus Arbery was seen crying and hugging supporters outside the courtroom, and saying, “He didn’t do nothing, but run and dream.”

Reports of cheering could be heard from the hallways inside the courtroom, and the atmosphere outside the courthouse was jubilant as Black Lives Matter flags waved and supporters chanted.

Issued In a statement issued Wednesday, United States President Joe Biden said, “Ahmaud Arbery’s killing – witnessed by the world on video – is a devastating reminder of how far we have to go in the fight for racial justice in this country. Mr. Arbery should be here today, celebrating the holidays with his mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, and his father, Marcus Arbery. Nothing can bring Mr. Arbery back to his family and to his community, but the verdict ensures that those who committed this horrible crime will be punished. While the guilty verdicts reflect our justice system doing its job, that alone is not enough. Instead, we must recommit ourselves to building a future of unity and shared strength, where no one fears violence because of the color of their skin. My administration will continue to do the hard work to ensure that equal justice under law is not just a phrase emblazoned in stone above the Supreme Court, but a reality for all Americans.”

Though prosecutors did not argue that racism motivated the killing, federal authorities have charged the three men with hate crimes, alleging that they chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery because he was a black man.

That case is scheduled to go to trial in February 2022.
