Surfside, Florida: Breaking News: Surfside, FL: Mayor of Miami-Dade County confirmed during a news conference on Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 that the transition from operation search and rescue to recovery at partial collapse site of the Champlain Towers South condominium building.

 

“It is with deep profound sadness that this afternoon I am able to share that we made the difficult decision to transition from operation search and rescue to recovery,” said Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava.

 

The announcement came from the afternoon news conference today just after Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava confirmed 8 bodies recovered; bring total of deaths to 54 deaths; 200 are accounted for and 86 are potentially unaccounted for.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava said it’s now been exactly two weeks since collapse; for 14 days our search and rescue team from around the state, country and world have been digging through this collapse.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava continued saying that crews used every available strategy and every piece of technology available to them to find people through the rubble; they remove 7 million pounds of concrete and debris from the mound; they use sonar, cameras, dogs, heavy machinery; they search for void spaces for victims; they ran towards a building that could have collapse, and they braved fire, smoke, torrential rain and strong winds in the hopes of finding people alive.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava also said that we demolished the standing building in just days to extend access to the full collapse site.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava said our top priority throughout this operation since day one has been to do everything possible – everything humanly possible – and to explore ever single portion of the collapse grid in search of survivors.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava said I could not be prouder of our extraordinary team; the man and woman from here at home and from around the world who given this search everything they had – day in and day out; man and woman whose own lives are driven by a single purpose – to save the lives of others.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava said that at this point we have truly exhausted every option available to us, and the search and rescue mission.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava continued saying so today is about beginning of the transition to recovery so we can help to bring closure to the families who have been suffering, waiting for news.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava said nothing we can do to bring back those we have lost, but we can and will do everything in our power possible to identify all of the victims and to offer closure to the families in this time of unimaginable grief.
