Los Angeles, California: An explosion leaves several people injured and a bomb squad tractor trailer truck destroyed following a seize of illegal fireworks by law enforcement and bomb squad on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Newton Division officers received a tip and discovered the massive cache of illegal fireworks at a home near East 27th Street and San Pedro Street.
At around 12:00 p.m. PT, bomb squad was called to seize some 5,000 pounds of illegal homemade and China manufactured pyrotechnics.
Some of the fireworks at the home appeared to be large mortar-sized devices used for commercial purposes.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, one man was arrested on suspicion of possessing fireworks and destructive devices, as well as on suspicion of child endangerment because two children were found at the home.

Later in the afternoon, pallet loads of fireworks were placed into the Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad armored container truck to be hauled away for disposal.
But as the bomb squad armored container truck was parked in the street with the ramp down, an explosion occurred rocking the residential neighborhood near an elementary school.

The explosion which was captured on camera by local news stations reporting on the illegal fireworks seize smashed.
The aftermath of the explosion left the bomb squad tractor trailer truck destroyed, blew out windows to nearby homes and damaged some civilian vehicles, and several people were seen being taken away on gurneys reportedly injured during the explosion.
According to the Los Angeles City Fire Department, at least 17 people were injured, including 10 officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, 6 civilians, and an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The Los Angeles City Fire Department said that 6 civilians were taken to a hospital, three with serious and three with minor injuries; and the 10 officers and agent had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital in fair condition.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, “Some of the fireworks were being stored in our Bomb Squad trailer as a precautionary measure. Unknown at this time what caused an explosion.”
The Los Angeles Police Department said that nobody was inside the bomb squad tractor trailer truck when the explosion occurred, and officers evacuated nearby homes.
Streets in the area of the explosion remain closed Wednesday night.
