Needles, California: Family, friends and officials from the City of Needles dedicated a sporting complex that is located at Nikki Bunch Memorial and Franz Flowers ballparks the “JoJo Garcia Memorial Sports Complex” during ceremony on Thursday, March 11th, 2021 in honor of a great community and sports volunteer Joseph “JoJo” Garcia.

Joseph Garcia, also known by many in the community as “Jose Garcia,” “Joe” and “JoJo”, was a long-standing, hard work and dedicated volunteer throughout the small Colorado River desert community he loved.

On the evening of Thursday, November 14th, 2019, Joseph “JoJo” Garcia passed away at the Colorado River Medical Center in Needles, California after he collapsed in the restroom area at Nikki Bunch Memorial Field where he was just minutes before volunteering at a flag football game and award ceremony.

The passing of “JoJo” was a big lost to the community who loved and respected Joe’s caring and dedication in helping and serving the community.

Following his passing, Needles City Council Members voted to rename the sporting Complex after Joe, and after the sign was received at the Needles Recreation Center, plans began last Friday to organize a sign dedication ceremony.

Just hours before the dedication ceremony, City of Needles crews placed the wooden poles and install the sign facing J Street, and then covered up the sign until the reveal at the sign dedication ceremony.

Needles City Mayor Jeff Williams spoke about Joe’s hard and dedicated work he did in the community as well as remember the good moments Joe brought to the community.

Joe selflessly donated many hours/years to the City of Needles’ youth basketball and flag football league, was involved in Needles Little League, CRAGS Softball, volunteered at community events such as boat and car shows, motorcycle runs, the local redeo and parades, volunteered at Needles High School football games, and served at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store and at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Downtown Needles, California.

Joe’s friend and ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez, got to know Joe for many great years, witnessed his caring spirit to the youth in the community; wanting to teach kids about sports and sportsmanship, and his dedication in wanting to help the community he loves as much as possible.

As mentioned by Needles City Mayor Jeff Williams, Joe would walk to and from volunteering, and people would wave at him and would talk with him on his walk.

Joe enjoyed playing darts and pool, and enjoyed eating at the McDonald’s and Munchy’s restaurant, hanging out with friends especially after a great win by the Needles Mustangs.

Family and friends thanked everybody for the work in making the sign and putting together a ceremony to dedicated the place Joe volunteered and cared so much about in his name.

A great man who cared so much to the community, we will all miss you and will never forget you Joe.
