Breaking News: Ludlow, CA: Freight train derailment near the National Trails Highway railroad crossing.

Ludlow, California: There has been a freight train derailment near the National Trails Highway railroad crossing.

The initial call came into dispatch at around 12:25 p.m. PT on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021 about a haft a mile east of the small desert town along historic Route 66.

Firefighters from the San Bernardino County Fire Department as well as crews from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway are on scene.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department reports 25-35 Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail cars derailed with some of the rail cars carrying hazardous materials, and no fire find at the freight train derailment.

Lena Kent, Director Public Affairs with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, tells ZachNews, “we had a train derailed near Ludlow at around 12:20 this afternoon. It was carrying freight of all kinds. It’s unknown at this time how many containers we actually derailed or we’re still assessing the situation. No injuries fortunately, and unclear at this time we will have that site cleared and reopened.”

The San Bernardino County Fire Department posted this video of firefighters from the San Bernardino County Fire Department at the freight train derailment.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department,”The scene was quickly accessed, and Haz-Mat personnel found one round tank car leaking a flammable liquid known as denatured alcohol (similar to ethanol). San Bernardino County Fire Department and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Haz-Mat were able to enter the tank car and mitigate the hazard. Overall it is estimated that several thousand gallons had leaked from the unit. San Bernardino County Fire Department and Burlington Northern Santa Fe remain on scene to ensure no other leaks and oversee the extensive clean-up process.”

ZachNews has contacted Amtrak regarding any delays related to the freight train derailment, but they are just finding out about the freight train derailment from us so they have no information to provide.

California Highway Patrol has National Trails Highway closed due to the train derailment, and Interstate 40 is not affected by this train derailment.

Motorists are being asked to please stay clear of this area.
