Needles, California: Members of the Needles Recreation and Parks Commission will be discussing new fencing and upgrading the security system at the Needles Skate Park on Thursday, February 25th, 2021.

According to the Staff Report from the City of Needles, the site visit of the skate park is for information on the fencing project and current security system. The current outer fencing that encloses the skate park is rotting and needs replaced in large sections. It will be replaced with chain link at a cost of approx. $3000 in materials with the labor done in-house. Discussion on the current security system and the handling of the vandalism issues.

According to the Staff Report from the City of Needles, the Fiscal Impact is $3000+ for the new fencing.

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels spoke about the condition and problems that have occurred at the Needles Skate Park during the Needles City Council Meeting inside the Needles City Council Chambers on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2021.

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels spoke to members of the Needles City Council about the problems that have been happening at the Needles Skate Park, including fights, bullying, misbehaving and vandalism including graffiti on the bowl of the skate park.

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels discussed improvements or upgrading the cameras there at the Needles Skate Park and painting over the offensive graffiti that has been tagged there in the bowl.

Needles City Council Member Zachery Longacre spoke during the Needles City Council Meeting on Tuesday, speaking about the Needles Skate Park and reaching out to local area hardware store for donation to paint the whole skate park.

Needles City Council Member Ellen A. Campbell also spoke during the Needles City Council Meeting on Tuesday, speaking about posting a new sign that states what is allowed in the Needles Skate Park and what is the safe requirements needed for using the Needles Skate Park.

During pass meetings, members of the Needles City Council have spoke about the problems that have occurred at the popular Needles Skate Park, speaking about getting reports from those who use the Needles Skate Park about being bullied and property being damaged, as well as reports of misbehaving at night and graffiti tagging along the bowl of the skate park.

Members of the Needles City Council have asked in the pass for deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station to step up patrols at the Needles Skate Park.

In 2019, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station held a Skate Day event in an efforts to build a better relationship with those who use the Needles Skate Park as well as to informed the young skaters about not misbehaving and destroying the place they love to skate.

According to the City of Needles, the Needles Skate Park is located in Duke Watkins Park at 1500 Flip Mendez Parkway in Needles, California.

Since 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation has awarded 493 grants to help build free, public skate parks in low-income communities across the U.S. Currently, 417 of those parks are open and serving over 4-million youth annually.

In 2003, the City of Needles received a grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation in the amount of $20,000 to build it’s skate park.

During the grand opening of the Needles Skate Park, skateboarder Tony Hawk showed his skater moves at the Needles Skate Park.

Over the years after opening, the Needles Skate Park has been used by local kids and families as well as those traveling through the community.

Officials from the City of Needles as well as the community want the popular skate park to continue to be there for the kids in the community, and want more to improve the condition of the skate park as well as improve the security and safety for users of the skate park.

The meeting of the Needles Recreation and Parks Commission is schedule to starting at 4:00 p.m. PT inside the Needles City Council Chambers, located at 1111 Bailey Avenue near J Street, to discuss Agenda Item #1 (Information Only).

Members of the Needles Recreation and Parks Commission will then recess the meeting from the Needles City Council Chambers, and will reconvene the meeting after 4:00 p.m. PT at the Needles Skate Park, located at 1505 Flip Mendez Parkway, to discuss the skate park on Agenda Item #2 (Information Only).

Just a reminder, the City of Needles wants to remain the public that the Needles Board of Public Utilities is continuing to hold meetings pursuant to the provisions of the Governor’s Executive Order N-29-20 which suspends certain requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act.

As a result of the California’s Executive Order to “Stay-At-Home”, the City of Needles said that in person participation at the Needles City Council meetings is not allowed at this time and the Needles City Council Chambers (1111 Bailey Avenue) are not open to the public.
