Needles, California: Large vegetation fire is burning near the Colorado River just east of Five Mile Road.
The vegetation fire was reported at around 11:04 p.m. PT on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020.
ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez walked over to the vegetation fire overnight, and captured on camera these great pictures as well as videos from the vegetation fire.
Initially reports that the vegetation fire was burning near Interstate 40 just east of Park Moabi Road, but ZachNews found that the vegetation fire was actually burning near the Colorado River just east of Five Mile Road.
The glow of the flames could be seen from miles away, including from Needles, California and along Interstate 40.
ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez arrived to find large flames burning in the distance not far from the railroad tracks.
An Amtrak passenger train as well as freight train continued by with the the glow of the flames burning in the desert night background.
San Bernardino County Fire Department as well as Mohave Valley Fire Department and brush handcrews were on scene at the vegetation fire named Five Mile Fire or Five Mile I.C. (Incident Command).
ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez continued along a dirt road leading towards the Colorado River just west of the large lake area where the vegetation fire jumped the dirt road spreading west along the desert south of the Colorado River, but not jumped the Colorado River.
Mohave Valley Fire Department engine and battalion chief truck was parked along the dirt road as a handcrew truck arrived heading west of the dirt road and the large lake area; the vegetation fire spread west along the side south of the Colorado River.
Not far from the railroad track and on the south side of the large lake, firefighters from the Mohave Valley Fire Department and San Bernardino County Fire Department were spotted working on keeping the vegetation fire from burning more towards the railroad tracks.
A bulldozer was called to arrive to the area and was scheduled to in the morning to help in containing the vegetation fire spread.
As morning arrived, ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez continued along a dirt road that runs along the south side of the Colorado River heading towards the large lake; the vegetation fire burned thick vegetation and tall trees in the area near a large large and even on the island on the large lake.
Firefighters from the Mohave Valley Fire Department and San Bernardino County Fire Department as well as a handcrew passed by along the dirt road heading to the far end of the large lake.
Firefighters began putting a fire break so to make sure the vegetation fire doesn’t continued southeast; using water from their engine, shovels and chainsaws.
Flames grow overnight but began to decrease during the later morning hours.
As of 9:00 a.m. PT, the vegetation fire burned between 80 to 100 acres and firefighters where getting the upper hand of the vegetation fire.
According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the cause of the vegetation fire is under investigation.
