Following the main break, a water “hammer” effect was created at least a dozen additional leaks were reported at the L Street Boost, Chesney Subdivision and the City’s Golf Maintenance Yard.

The NPUA submitted a $350.000 emergency funding request to the Slate Water Resources Control Board for funding for the D Street Bridge repairs.

The repairs include; installation of a new 1,560 feet of 12″ pressurized main transmission line from the well to the reservoirs along East Broadway to serve as an alternate route of water supply from the low zone to the high zone.

An installation of a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) was also placed on well no. 15 to regulate system pressures to reduce the risk of a future water hammer.

The additional segment and installation of a VFD were completed prior to summer.

The final repairs to the D Street Bridge arc; installation of cathodic protection and an x-ray of the existing 16″ main and apply a polywrap and epoxy paint.

NPUA needed to wait until the summer high use months passed in order to assure that limited reservoir capacity was available during the line repairs.
