Kingman, Arizona: The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 involving an officer with the Kingman Police Department (KPD) at a residence in the 2000 block of Fairgrounds Blvd.

According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:36 a.m., KPD received a report of a man with a machete chopping at his neighbor’s bushes on his property. Upon the officer’s arrival to this call, the male subject could not be located.

At approximately 2:12 AM, KPD received another call from the same reporting party that the male subject had exited his residence and fired a rifle round through the window of the reporting party’s home.

KPD Officers arrived on scene and the male subject, now identified as Jason Arpad Peters, 45 of Kingman, retreated into his home, continuing to fire rounds from the rifle at responding officers.

During the standoff, KPD continued to try to communicate with Peters to exit the home. Peters continued to fire rounds out of the windows of his residence, striking officer’s vehicles and neighboring homes until approximately 5:28 AM.

At that time, Peters fired a round out of the back window of the home towards a KPD Officer, who then returned fire. Peters then stopped firing the weapon and negotiations continued.

Lake Havasu City Police Department SWAT was contacted and responded to the scene. After no response from within the residence, entry was made by SWAT officers at which time Peters was found deceased. At that time, it was determined that the rifle used by Peters during the incident was a high powered air rifle.

This investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is pending with the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine a cause of death.

It is protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident. One KPD officer is currently on administrative leave, which is also customary in an officer-involved shooting incident.
