Needles, California: The City of Needles has issued boil water ordered for the Colorado Shores area after a large water leak and sink hole occurred on Monday, October 5th, 2020 under Fairway Drive near River Road.

The incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. PT on Monday, October 5th, 2020 along the entrance into the Colorado Shores neighborhood.

In a press release emailed into ZachNews at 3:54 p.m. PT, Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “About 11AM today a large water leak appeared in Beach Drive just off of River Road. It created a large sink hole under the road half of the size of my office. The street was blocked off and the road excavated from the curb to the center of the road where the a 10’ long “rip” in the pipe that serves the entire Colorado Shores neighborhood was found. All Public Works and Utility crews have been mobilized. The deteriorated pipe has been cut out and we are replacing it with new pipe. It will likely take another 3-4 hours to complete the repairs. Because the water system has been exposed to the air and dirt, health safety protocols require the NPUA to issue a boil water notice to all residents there. See attached. Additionally. the NPUA is providing a case of bottled water to each residence, and will be prepared to do so again tomorrow. This is another example of old, deteriorated water pipes failing and threatening public health.

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels laters tells ZachNews that the street location was Fairway Drive, no Beach Drive.

As for the later notification regarding this water leak incident, Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “We thought it was going to be an easy fix but it turned out to be a long dated; we’ve been at this for six hours now, and by three it turned into an major project.

When asked if there was any health concerns that residents in the Colorado Shores neighborhood should be aware of between the time of the incident (11:00 a.m. PT) and when the notifications got released publicly (3:54 p.m. PT), Needles City Manager Rick Daniel said, “Ah no because we had the pipe sealed off until we took in apart at four o’clock when we expose the water pipe to the environment, and that’s when health and safety protocols kicked in.

At around 5:00 p.m. PT, the roadway along Fairway Drive is reopened but with the right side along northbound Fairway Drive partially closed where the sink hole occurred.
