News Update: Needles, CA: Smoking prohibitions within city playground areas and prohibiting electronic smoking devices within city facilities ordinance tabled to next Needles City Council Meeting.

Needles, California: Members of the Needles City Council have unanimously voted on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020 to table discussion and action on an ordinance expanding smoking prohibitions within the City to include playground areas and prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices within City of Needles owned facilities.

The agenda item was tabled until the next Needles City Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 meeting.

According to the City of Needles, agenda item 10; waive the reading and order posted Ordinance No. 631-AC amending, in part, Chapter 2, Article VIII of the Needles Municipal Code expanding smoking prohibitions within the City to include playground areas and prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices within City-owned facilities (1st Reading – Post).

At the June 9, 2020, Needles City Council meeting, an agenda item presented by the Needles Bright Futures Coalition was discussed and, on recommendation of the Parks & Recreation Commission, an ordinance was prepared to amend the city code to expand no smoking in playground areas and prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices within city-owned facilities.

The is no critical timeline, but as for fiscal impact, cost to prepare and process an ordinance and approximately $1000 for signs in all parks/playgrounds.

According to the City of Needles, recommendation is waive the reading and order posted Ordinance No. 631-AC amending, in part, Chapter 2, Article VIII of the Needles Municipal Code expanding smoking prohibitions within the City to include playground areas and prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices within City-owned facilities.

The City of Needles wants to remain the public that the Needles City Council is continuing to hold meetings pursuant to the provisions of the Governor’s Executive Order N-29-20 which suspends certain requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act. As a result of the California’s Executive Order to “Stay-At-Home”, in person participation at the Needles City Council meetings is not allowed at this time and the Needles City Council Chambers are not open to the public.

The public will be able to attend the meeting on Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 via telephonically at the posted phone number and participant access number that will be announced when the agenda is posted, and you can submit any comments in writing prior to that meeting by emailing: djones@cityofneedles.com
