Breaking News: Needles, CA: Fire at homeless encampment east of Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Needles, California: A fire is burning at a homeless encampment east of Jack Smith Memorial Park.

The call came in at around 6:00 a.m. PT on Saturday, January 4th, 2020.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez was broadcast live from the scene of the fire.

San Bernardino County Fire Department Station 32 as well as Mohave Valley Fire Department Station 81 are on scene.

This area is City of Needles land, not near any residential structures and has been known for people who are homeless to camp out near the Colorado River.

As of 7:04 a.m. PT, the fire appears to be contained and firefighters are mopping up.

San Bernardino County Fire Department tells ZachNews that nobody was on site when the fire occurred, and the cause of the fire is not yet determined.

A deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station was also on scene.

For the last few weeks, temperatures near the Colorado River have been around the 40’s.
