News Update!!: Poway, CA: Latest Information: Shooting at Chabad of Poway.

Here is the latest information regarding the shooting at Chabad of Poway in Poway, California on Saturday, April 27th, 2019.

As of Tuesday, April 30th, 2019, the gunman who’s accused of opening fire inside a synagogue in Poway, California appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday on murder, attempted murder, hate crime and weapons charges.

The gunman, 19 year old John T. Earnest, pleaded not guilty in the brief arraignment and will appear back in court on Thursday, May 30th, 2019, and the judge said John Earnest will continue to be held without bail.

According to San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, John Earnest faces life without parole, plus 103 years to life in prison.

“There is only one villain in this case, but there are many heroes, and that is what defines us,” San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said during a press conference after the court proceedings.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan also said that the weapon Earnest is accused of using in the shooting was purchased legally.

John Earnest reportedly stood stone-faced during much of the brief court hearing and said little, only saying “yes,” when asked if he agreed to a longer-than-usual delay before his next court hearing.

A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf by a public defender.

In addition to charges stemming from Saturday’s shooting, John Earnest is also charged with arson of a house of worship for allegedly trying to burn down an Escondido, California mosque on Tuesday, March 23th, 2019.

John Earnest allegedly took responsibility for setting a fire at the Islamic Center of Escondido in a nine-page manifesto posted online before Saturday’s synagogue shooting.

As of Monday, April 29th, 2019, the women who was shot and killed in the shooting at a synagogue in Poway, California was remembered on Monday at a memorial service.

Family, friends and members of the congregation came together to remember 60 year old Lori Gilbert-Kaye, describing her as a loving, giving woman.

The community are calling Lori Gilbert-Kaye a hero for trying to protect the rabbi after the suspect opened fire as about 100 people worshipped at the synagogue during the last day of Passover.

Kaye’s husband, Howard Kaye, M.D., a doctor with Scripps Coastal Medical Center Cedar-Vista, spoke during the memorial service saying to the congregation that he performed CPR on his wife and that she died quickly.

Howard Kaye, M.D. also described the gunman as “lower than an animal” who was likely raised on a diet of blood and gore.

“My wife was a person. Is a person who did so much good in her life. Whatever good she did always turned out. And whatever I did that might not have been good, she repaired and made me look good,” Howard Kaye, M.D. described his wife.

Kaye’s daughter, Hannah Kaye, spoke during the memorial service saying to the congregation that her mother was a rainbow, her greatest advocate and her dancing partner.

“My mother gave me every opportunity I could have drLori died on Passover. Lori died in a synagogue. And Lori died saving our Rabbi,” her friend said.

Kaye was credited with playing a key role in building the synagogue in Poway, California.

Sam Hoffman, president of Chabad of Poway synagogue, spoke during the memorial service saying to the congregation that, “The very place where an anti-Semitic terrorist came to tear us down, we’ve now come together to build our community back up.”

The shooting inside the synagogue occurred at 11:20 a.m. PT on Saturday, April 27th, 2019, took the life of Lori Gilbert Kaye and wounded three people.

The three surviving victims, identified by authorities as 57 year old Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 34 year old Almog Peretz, and his 8 year old niece, Noya Dahan, were treated at hospitals and have since been released from the hospital.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, at 11:23 a.m. PT an armed man walked into the synagogue located at 16934 Chabad Way and began opening fire inside the synagogue where around 100 people were inside at the time gathered on the last day of Passover.

At least four people were wounded by the gunfire, including a woman who was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

According to Bill Gore from the San Diego County Sheriff Department, as the suspect fled the scene, an off-duty United States Border Patrol agent who was in the synagogue at the time of the shooting opened fire on the suspect, missing the man but striking his vehicle.

California Highway Patrol received a call from a man claiming to have carried out the attack and telling dispatchers where he was located.

Around the same time, a San Diego Police Department Officer spotted a vehicle matching the suspect’s car in the area.

According to Chief David Nisleit with the San Diego Police Department, the suspect pulled over, jumped out of his car with his hands up and was taken into police custody.

The shooter was identified by authorities as 19 year old John Earnest from San Diego, California.

After the suspect was taken into police custody, authorities arrived at John Earnest’s home in Rancho Peñasquitos, California where he apparently lived with his parents.

According to Bill Gore from the San Diego County Sheriff Department, John Earnest does not have a criminal history and has no apparent connection with white supremacist groups.

The Federal Bureau Investigation are working with local authorities to review a “manifesto” posted online by the suspected shooter.

As the investigation continues, the community came together Saturday night at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church to remember the victims of Chabad of Poway.
