News Update!!: Downtown Needles, CA: Fatality and injury in residential structure fire on West Broadway at I Street.

ZachNews can confirm that there was a fatality and an injury in a residential structure fire on the 1200 block of West Broadway at I Street in Downtown Needles, California.

The initial call reporting the residential structure fire came in at 9:46 p.m. PT on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2019, with additional 911 callers stated that they could hear yelling inside the structure.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, firefighters arrived to discover a single-story residence fully involved in fire, and sustained winds over 20 mph were pushing the blaze through the entire structure.

With life safety as their top priority, firefighters attempted to make entry into the building but were pushed back by extreme fire conditions.

Additional fire department personnel from Arizona were called to respond to the fire, including Mohave Valley Fire Department, Fort Mojave Mesa Fire Department and Golden Shores Fire Department.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, due to the percentage of fire involvement, energized power lines down around two sides of the building, and an exposure threat to surrounding residences, firefighters engaged in a defensive attack in an attempt to limit the spread of the fire.

Multiple explosions were heard during the initial stages of the fire attack.

Firefighters were ultimately able to gain control of the blaze approximately thirty minutes into the incident and confined the burn to the building of origin.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez spoke with Battalion Chief Mike McClintock from the San Bernardino County Fire Department who confirmed there was a fatality and injury in this fire.

“Unfortunately, when the fire was put out, we found one deceased person,” Battalion Chief Mike McClintock from the San Bernardino County Fire Department told ZachNews.

ZachNews has learned later from the San Bernardino County Fire Department that the second victim, an adult female, was airlifted to University Medical Center – Las Vegas, Nevada for treatment of serious burn injuries.

There were no other injuries reported on scene related to the fire.

At this moment, no names or ages has been released on both of the people.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, damage estimates were not available at the time of this release.

The structure which had several add-ons was destroyed and is a complete loss.

The explosions were attributed to numerous gas cylinders located inside of the residence.

The cause of the fire is under investigation through County Fire’s Office of the Fire Marshal and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb detail.

West Broadway and Front between H Street and J Street as well as I Street between Front Street and Third Street were closed during the fire and investigation, but all streets have since been reopened.
