Downtown Needles, CA: Needles Regional Museum presents “The Olive Oatman Story” and “The Mojave Road and the Military.”

The Needles Regional Museum will be presenting The Olive Oatman Story staring at 3:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 inside the El Garces Train Depot, located at 920 Front Street, in Downtown Needles, California.

Debbie Marschke-Miller will be portraying Olive in full costume, complete with chin tattoo and hair style. Debbie made the reproduction gown herself.

Early in the year of 1851, the Roys Boise Oatman family was attacked by Yavapai Indians near the Gila River in what was then the New Mexico Territory. Oatman had chosen to leave the small wagon train they were traveling with and set out on his own. During the attack six members of the Oatman family were killed outright.

Lorenzo Oatman was beaten and left for dead, and Olive and Mary Ann were taken hostage. A year into their capture, the Mojave Indian Tribe negotiated with the Yavapai to purchase Olive and Mary Ann. They were brought to the Mojave Valley near Needles, CA. In 1853 a famine took the life of Mary Ann. Olive was granted permission to bury her sister instead of the Mojave tradition of cremating their dead.

Olive credited Chief Cairook and his wife for her survival. It was also in 1853 that Fort Yuma became aware that there were white captives living among the Mojave’s but it wasn’t until February 22, 1856 Olive was returned to Fort Yuma.

Additionally Steve Marschke will be presenting “The Mojave Road and the Military” in full 1800’s costume.

Both of our presenters are great speakers and the event promises to be both informative and fun.

There will also be door prizes and Hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Admission is free.
