Davis, CA: Mourning the loss of a Davis Police Department Officer who died after being shot at the scene of multiple vehicle crash by a gunman.

The Davis Police Department and the community of Davis, California is mourning the loss of a 22 year old officer who died after being shot at the scene of multiple vehicle crash by a gunman on Thursday, January 10th, 2019.

At around 6:45 p.m. PT, Officer Natalie Corona responded to a three vehicle crash near 5th Street and D street in Davis, California.

Officer Natalie Corona was the first officer to arrive to the scene of multiple vehicle crash when she was shot by a gunman.

Officer Natalie Corona was rushed to U.C. Davis Medical Center in nearby Sacramento, California.

Davis Police Department Chief Darren Pytel announced that Officer Natalie Corona passed away at the hospital just before 12:00 a.m. PT.

Officer Natalie Corona started working for the Davis Police Department in 2016 in community services, eventually going to the academy and graduating this past July.

Officer Natalie Corona completed her training just before Christmas 2018 and became a full-time officer.

“I can tell you that I haven’t seen anyone work harder in a part-time capacity and be more motivated to be police officer than Natalie,” said Davis Police Department Chief Darren Pytel, adding, “She was a rising star within the department. And, I’ve known her for a couple of years. And, she started as a part-time employee volunteer. And, I can tell you that I haven’t seen anybody work harder in a part-time capacity and be more motivated to be a police officer than Natalie.”

The suspect, only described as a white male in his 20’s, fled the scene, but was later found at a nearby house.

Officers surrounded the house, sent into the house a robot and flash-bang grenades were deployed.

Just before 1:30 a.m. PT, the Davis Police Department announced that the suspect was found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the gunman was in the vehicle crash or what the motive was.

Officer Natalie Corona is survived by her parents, including her father who a 26 year veteran of the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office.
