The repeal of net neutrality protections officially take effect, nearly six months after the Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted to roll back the rules. The net neutrality protections banned broadband providers from slowing or blocking access to the internet or charging companies higher fees for faster access. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, appointed by United States President Donald Trump, had called those rules “heavy-handed”and “a mistake.” Ajit Pai also argued the rules deterred innovation because internet service providers had little incentive to improve the broadband network infrastructure. Ajit Pai took the Federal Communications Commission back to a “light” regulatory approach which pleased both Republicans and internet service providers. Supporters of net neutrality say the internet as we know it may not exist much longer without the protections. Democrats in United States Congress, who have been fighting all year to restore the 2015 net neutrality rules, say the repeal has opened the door for large broadband and wireless companies to “control people’s online activities.” With the Democrats in control the House of Representatives following the midterm elections in November 2018, the Democrats say they plan to get net neutrality rules restore.

  • On Saturday, July 21st, 2018:

Authorities were in a standoff with an armed suspect inside a Trader Joe’s store in Silver Lake, California who was wanted in a fatal shooting. The Los Angeles Police Department said the suspect was an adult male in his late 20’s, and the police pursuit stemmed from a shooting that occurred in Los Angeles, California earlier that afternoon. The suspect shot his grandmother in her 70’s and a second woman in her 20’s later confirmed to be the suspect’s girlfriend. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle which authorities located in the Hollywood, California area by a tracking system. The Los Angeles Police Department began their pursuit there and the chase ended in front of the Trader Joe’s store in Silver Lake, California. The vehicle the suspect was driving crashed into a pole near the Trader Joe’s store. The Los Angeles Police Department said the suspect jumped out of the car and shot some rounds off when he got out of the car. Officers returned some fire at him, but he ran straight in Trader Joe’s store. Moments later, Officers approached under heavy caution and rescued the woman, who was left behind in the pursuit vehicle. She was taken to a nearby hospital with a grazing wound. Both customers and workers began running from the Trader Joe’s store to safety, jumping out of windows and escaping down a ladder at a window. Officers had immediately surrounded the Trader Joe’s store and were working to take control of the store. A young male hostage was also able to walk out of the front door with his arms raised, and he was taken to safety. The Los Angeles Fire Department also responded to the scene and stated that 100 firefighters and 18 ambulances had been deployed to the scene. SWAT vehicles were in position and a location to perform emergency triage had been set up. The barricade situation lasted about three hours and ended that evening. Five hostages exited the front doors of the Trader Joe’s with the suspect also exiting in handcuffs. The suspect was quickly taken into police custody against a side wall, while the hostages left without further incident. The Los Angeles Police Department said they were in contact with the suspect during the “horrific” standoff, and the negotiation team included a psychologist and tactical members. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it evaluated a total of 10 patients at Trader Joe’s store. Among the injured, six patients were transported to the hospital, including a 12-year-old boy. The injured patients were taken to the hospital related to the incident were in fair condition. Los Angeles City Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed that a woman, later identified as 27 year old Melyda “Mely” Maricela Corado, was shot and killed inside the Trader Joe’s store. Melyda “Mely” Maricela Corado was the manager of the Trader Joe’s store, and her body was reportedly dragged out by another Trader Joe’s store employee early in the standoff. The woman was the only confirmed fatality from the store. Trader Joe’s PR director Kenya Friend-Daniel said in a statement, “Our hearts are broken over what happened today. This has been an incredible trauma, and our thoughts are with our Crew Members and customers. Our focus is on doing whatever we can to support them at this time. We appreciate everything Los Angeles law enforcement did to ensure an end to this ordeal.” On Tuesday, July 24th, 2018, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said the suspect, identified as 28 year old Gene Evin Atkins, was charged with a total of 31 counts. Gene Evin Atkins appeared in court briefly Tuesday and agreed to a rescheduling of his arraignment to Tuesday, August 14th, 2018. Bail was set for Gene Evin Atkins at $18.775 million. The charges Gene Evin Atkins faces included one count each of murder; kidnapping; fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly; grand theft of an automobile; driving or taking a vehicle without consent; discharge of a firearm with gross negligence; shooting at an occupied motor vehicle; and assault with a firearm. Gene Evin Atkins was also charged with two counts of attempted, willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder; four counts of attempted murder of a peace officer; four counts of assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm; and 13 counts of false imprisonment of a hostage. The criminal complaint additionally includes allegations of gun use and causing great bodily injury and death. Gene Evin Atkins was charged with the murder of Melyda Maricela Corado. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said Melyda Maricela Corado was struck once by gunfire from an officer who was firing back at Gene Evin Atkins, who fired at officers at the end of a chase outside Trader Joe’s store. If convicted as charged, Gene Evin Atkins faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. On Monday, December 17th, 2018, Gene Evin Atkins tried to “plead insanity” at his arraignment on murder and other counts, leading a judge to enter a plea of not guilty on his behalf. Gene Evin Atkins was representing himself against the charges. Appearing inside a courtroom in Downtown Los Angeles, California, dress in yellow jail clothes, Gene Evin Atkins objected to a media request to photograph the arraignment, telling the judge he believed one victim drew conclusions from footage seen on television, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan overruled the objection. Three women who had been among the hostages sat in the courtroom as the prosecutor read the list of charges against Gene Evin Atkins, who stood quietly, his hands shackled and his head bowed. Gene Evin Atkins then asked for a postponement of his arraignment. When Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan explained that he already was being arraigned, Gene Evin Atkins replied, “I plead insanity … I’m pleading insanity.” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan answered, “You’ve been found competent to be your own attorney.” On Wednesday, November 7th, 2018, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gustavo Sztraicher granted during a court hearing Gene Evin Atkins’ request to act as his own attorney after warning the defendant that it was, in his opinion, “almost always an unwise decision to represent yourself” and that the case against him was being handled by an experienced criminal prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef. At his arraignment, the defendant clarified to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan, “I’m pleading incompetence at the time of the allegations.” After Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan entered a not guilty plea for the record, Gene Evin Atkins told the judge he had “no criminal record but I have an extensive mental health record,” including a diagnosis of “bipolar disorder and a list of other disorders, as well.” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan let bail stand at $15.1 million and ordered Gene Evin Atkins to return to court on Friday, February 15th 2019, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. Gene Evin Atkins had asked for a year to review more than 5,500 pages of discovery turned over by the prosecutor during the arraignment.
