The Needles Public Utility Authority encourages you to review these simple safety reminders for safeguarding your home during the holiday season.

Just a few minutes of your time can help avoid these common household hazards and keep you and your family safe and healthy.

Beware of Fire-Starters Remember that candles, fireplaces, aromatic oil warmers, decorative lights and Christmas trees are all combustible. Make sure candles are on stable, level surfaces that are out of reach of children, and avoid leaving burning candles unattended or sleeping in a room with a lit candle.

Don’t burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items. Home electrical fires occur most often in December Attach only a maximum of three strings of incandescent lights to any one extension cord; don’t use damaged or frayed cords or strings of lights. Turn off and unplug all decorations at night, for both real trees and artificial trees.

Water your tree regularly so it doesn’t dry out. As always, check that your fire extinguisher is working and keep it nearby. For more electric safety tips, visit the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESEL).

** Take Care of Your Health: **

Don’t forget to eat healthfully even though you’re tempted by those holiday desserts and drinks. Limit fats, salt, and sugary foods when possible. The holidays can be stressful, so eating right and getting the proper amount of sleep is important Avoid injuries by eliminating tripping hazards.

Use a secure stepstool when decorating around the house. Also keep a watchful eye on children, especially during the holiday season. Put potentially dangerous household items and choking hazards out of reach. Make sure toys are wed properly, and be alert to objects on the floor around the house such as dolls, Legos, trucks, boxes and other new gifts that might be left sitting around.

** Secure Your Home: **

If you travel during the holidays, don’t make your home an easy target. Make sure gifts are not easily visible through a window from the outside, and ensure your house is well-lit.

Put your holiday lights on a timer and use motion sensors outside your home if you can A security camera can discourage package thieves when parcels are left in your mailbox or on your doorstep.

If possible, have packages sent to an alternative location or a delivery locker Also, be wary of door-to-door salespeople during the holidays, making sure they are legitimate and have proper identification Inspect your windows and doors to check that all locks are intact, and don’t post your travel plans online or in social media. Tell only trusted people when you will be gone.
