Needles, CA: City of Needles Officials return from International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon 2018.
Officials from the City of Needles attended last week the International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon 2018, also known as ICSC RECon 2018 inside the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The world’s largest global gathering of retail real estate professionals was held from Sunday, May 20th, 2018 to Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018.
ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary A. Lopez attended the convention to find out what was ICSC RECon 2018 and what your officials from the City of Needles are doing during the convention.
Needles City Mayor Edward T. Paget, Needles Vice City Mayor Jeff Williams, Needles City Council Member Shawn Gudmundson, Needles City Director Of Development Services Patrick Martinez, and Mr. Michael Bracken, DMG Economics join over 40,000 retail and real estate professionals, developers, owners, brokers and other city and county officials at this 3 day convention that fill up all of the three halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center with industry professionals and exhibitors.
Thousands of retail and real estate professionals, developers, owners, brokers and other city and county officials file into the Las Vegas Convention Center, flooded into the convention center’s 3 halls with allies upon allies of booths and displays that were set up in a city like setting with allies given letter and number street names and booths that most were set on display like small buildings and store fronts; a city within a city.
During the convention, City of Needles Officials had 15 meetings with individuals related to retail and business, and between those meetings, went around the convention meeting with more retailers and businesses who would be interested in coming to Needles, California.
During their run around the convention halls, City of Needles Officials met with representatives of Sonic Burger, Dunkin Donuts, the Marriott, La Quinta Inn and Suites, Family Dollar/Dollar Tree, Panda Restaurant Group, Save-A-Lot Supermarket, Grocery Outlet, Arby’s, Fallas Discount Stores, Wyndham Hotel Group, 7 Eleven, Del Taco, Jersey Mike’s Subs, and many more.
Many of those meetings will lead to follow up meetings, hoping that the next step after that will be a deal to come and open in the community, but before anything, these businesses – including retail, hotels, grocery stores, restaurants and fast food eatries – have to do research those communities, checking if the demographic, data and numbers on those communities are a right fit both for their business and the community.
That research businesses do and what businesses are looking for in those communities was discussed in detail with ZachNews during an interview with Hoyt Jones, President of Jersey Mike’s Subs.
Hoyt talked about their sandwich business, the format on what they pick for a location to open up their business, and spoke about the ICSC’s RECon 2018 convention and what’s their goal of being here at the convention.
The convention had a bit of everything that relates to the retail and real estate industry, including keynote speakers and workshops are held inside conference pavilions outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center near the Westgate Hotel.
Most of the topics being discussed were on the industry as a whole, talking about the growing e-commerce sales and the outlook on brick-and-mortar retail stores as well as what are the trends of consumers related to shopping for goods, food and medicine, and what are how are businesses and industry doing to adapt and prepare for the future.
Discussing what’s going on in the industy, President and CEO of ICSC Tom McGee spoke during a keynote lunch presentation during the convention on Monday, May 21st, 2018.

Tom McGee shared some high level perspectives on in the industry and breaking it down into numbers and providing charts on what’s happening in the industry.
How businesses are trying to prepare for the next trends and future of shopping, and how to get consumers into their retail stores was discussed with ZachNews during an interview with Susan Akbarpour, Co-Founder and CEO of Mavatar Technologies Inc.
Susan talked about Mavatar, a smart shopping and shoppable content publishing platform that helps shoppers to shop smart and influencers to connect with smart shoppers.
Susan demonstrated to ZachNews how Mavatar would work for the shopper and the business.
Susan also talked about the ICSC’s RECon 2018 convention and what they’re hoping to accomplish at the convention.
As I continued to learn more about I.C.S.C. RECon 2018, I discovered an section of the convention called RECon SPREE, a specialty retail industry’s premier event that gives a unique opportunity for key decision makers to gather under one roof and make deals.
Attendees come to source products and services, and find new location opportunities for their specialty retail business.
This is where I met Chelsea Brownridge, CEO of DogSpot, who spoke to me about about their safe and comfortable house for dogs that would be put next to a place, such as a retail shop, that doesn’t allow pets inside, and with a swipe of their access card the dog’s owner can place their dog inside the shareable, high-tech, vet-grade dog house that’s air conditioned when it’s hot, have a heated pad to keep the dog warm when it’s cold, and a camera so that the owner can check on their dog as they do business in that retail shop.
Chelsea also talked about the ICSC’s RECon 2018 convention which was her first time attending, and what brought her to the convention.
I also got to met Jacob Oh, CEO of Nitro Puff, who spoke with me about this tasty new craze in desserts with cool smoke, which uses sweet cereal, flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen right infront of you, and after you put it in your mouth, cool smoke comes out like a dragon blowing out smoke.
Jacob also talked about the ICSC’s RECon 2018 convention and what’s their goal of being here at the convention.
Overall, the convention was a new experience into the retail and business industry, and hopefully the meetings held with businesses and City of Needles Officials will bring our community closer to more new businesses, jobs, and maybe a grocery store.
