A new pedestrian bridge that was scheduled to open in early 2019 near collapsed on Thursday, March 15th, 2018 near the campus of Florida International University in Miami, Florida.

The 174 foot long bridge, which crosses over Southwest 8th Street near 109th Avenue and was built to allow students living across the busy roadway to cross safely, collapsed on top of vehicles, with at least two vehicles could be seen pinned by massive slabs of concrete.
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol are confirming multiple fatalities and several vehicles.
Reports that there are multiple fatalities have been reported when
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are treated a total of 5 patients, with a patient being transported as a trauma alert to Kendall Regional Hospital.
The school released a statement shortly after the tragic collapse.
Motorists in the area are being asked to advised to avoid the area on Southwest 8th Street between Southwest 107th Avenue and the Turnpike.
Motorists are being rerouted to Flagler Street and Coral Way.
Florida International University is currently on spring break and classes are not in session.
