A gunman has been arrested after a shooting and standoff at an apartment complex in Pomona, California that killed an officer with the Pomona Police Department.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Captain Christopher Bergner, shortly after 9:00pm PT on Friday, March 9th, 2018, officers responded to a report of a reckless vehicle, and a short pursuit ensued.
After the driver refused to pull over, his truck crashed into a parked vehicle and the officers chased him on foot.
The suspect then ran into an apartment in the 1400 block of Palomares Street, near Fernleaf Avenue, in Pomona, California.
As the suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom, officers attempted to contact him, but the suspect began firing through the door and 2 officers were struck in the shootout.

Both officers were transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where an officer died.
The body of the fallen officer was escorted by scores of law enforcement personnel and firefighters to the coroner’s office in Boyle Heights, California.

According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the slain officer was with the Pomona Police Department and is identified as 30 year old Gregory Casillas from Upland, California.
According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Captain Christopher Bergner, Casillas was shot in the head and was carried out to the street by his colleagues, who attempted life-saving measures.
A second officer, whose identity has not been released, is in serious condition after undergoing surgery.
As the barricade situation continued, SWAT officers and crisis negotiators attempted contact the suspect for hours.
After flash bang grenades were used to get the suspect out, the suspect was finally taken into police custody at around 2:00pm PT.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has identified the suspect as 39 year old Isaias De Jesus Valencia from Pomona, California.
