News Alert!!: Needles, CA: Needles Vice Mayor is working to restore school resource officer in wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

In wake of the deadly shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, work is underway to restore a school resource officer which will serve the schools in Needles, California.

Needles Vice Mayor Jeff Williams tells ZachNews that he’s working with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the Needles Unified School District, and San Bernardino County Supervisor to “restore our school resource officer position.”

According to the United States Department of Justice, a school resource officer is define as a sworn law enforcement officers responsible for safety and crime prevention in schools.

School resource officers are typically employed by a local law enforcement agencies and work closely with administrators in an effort to create a safer environment for both students and staff.

The responsibilities of school resource officers are similar to regular police department officers and sheriff’s deputies in that they have the ability to make arrests, respond to calls for service, and document incidents that occur within their jurisdiction.

School resource officers typically have additional duties that include mentoring and conducting presentations on youth-related issues.

Currently, there is no school resource officer serving for the schools in the Needles Unified School District.

According to the Needles City Manager Rick Daniels, the school district did not have enough money to pay for school resource officer.

A gunman identified as 19 year old Nikolas Cruz, a former student, opened fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 taking the lives of 17 people and injuring 14 people.

The City of Needles have lowered their flags to half-mast in memories of the victims in the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
