Many of the service station owners, including from the Westside Shell, Mobil, and American Gas, all addressed their outrage over this rate increases on sewage, charging them thousand of dollars more in rates.
Joe Jones of the Shell Travel Center in Needles, California spoke to members of the Needles City Council and to the public about the issue.
“It has come to my attention that the sewage rates have really climbed for service stations in Needles. I don’t know if you’re aware of it but you’re talking $3,000 – $5,000 per service station. Mind I guest their doing something with the sewage, that have to do with the gas nozzles. If you do all my gas nozzles, that’s $5,400 a month for sewage. I hope that’s a mistake – it sounds like a mistake. Every other business in town that have a gas station are getting bills right now with $3,600 – $4,000 in sewage fees. Hopefully that’s a mistake. If it’s not a mistake, you’ll have half of those stations closing down in the next 2 months and the others won’t be long behind them. I don’t understand this and I really hope this is a mistake because that is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of in my in entire life in the service station business. Where am I going to come up with $70,000 a year to pay for sewage. It’s beyond anything I’ve ever though of so I hope that this is an computer error. There’s people right here that are scared that their going to lose their businesses and you’ll odd to listen to these people; it’s pretty scary on our side. So hopefully it was a computer error on the bills and we’ll get that adjusted. If not, we’ll be back again at the next meeting,” said Joe Jones of the Shell Travel Center.
A representative for the new American Gas in Downtown Needles, California spoke to members of the Needles City Council and to the public about the issue.
“The bill – it’s just horrendous, and we spent close to a half a million dollars fixing that corner up for the City and the way the sewage bill is coming in it’s like I am paying for every single person that comes in. I mean I don’t have – motels for instance, you got sewage in every room. McDonald’s, Jack In The Box; you got people using the restroom. For me to pay this ridiculous prices I mean I can’t afford this – I got to shut my business down. Like the gentleman before me said, something has to be adjusted on that, and we’ve put a half a million dollars fixing that corner up and it would be a shame to see us pull out of there because of sewage bill. And I am really sad to say that we’re doing everything we can down there and this just takes out completely – I don’t know how long we’ll be able to maintain. So I don’t know all of you guys personally – I wish I did – I would like you guys to look into this; it’s really something that’s concerning our business down there, and I’m hoping like the gentleman before me that that’s a mistake, you can look into this, and adjust it because we can’t stay a float with that kind of bill,” said a representative for the new American Gas.
A representative for the Mobil Gas Station on the west end of Needles, California spoke to members of the Needles City Council and to the public about the issue and spoke about the cost this will be.
“I’m hoping this is an error too but if not, I would like to know who put this to start with, what we can do about it if anything; who we need to go see – you guys about this. It’s not much for me other then just 10 nozzles – that’s $3,000 a month – $36,000 a year. You have 106 nozzles (gas nozzles) in this town – $300 a nozzle – it’s $31,800 a month extra for sewage rates for these service stations; that’s $381,000 a year for 8 service stations. Some people can afford this – I may be able to get by. I’ve been here for 30 years and saved a little money so I might get by with that… but some of some of those places like the Chevron who got 24 nozzles – that’s $7,200 a month for sewer; $2800 for the Shell; American Gas got 12 pumps $3,600 a month… you can’t do this, we got a business to run here. How is this fair to push everything off on the service stations. We’re just like – we got people who work for us here in this community that are going to lose jobs because of it. So like I said, I would like to know who’s responsible, is it an error – find, let’s correct it; I don’t even might paying a little bit more, but when you go up a thousand percent – it’s crazy,” said representative for the Mobil Gas Station.
Needles City Manager Rick Daniels spoke to members of the Needles City Council and to the public about the issue saying, “The bills with the new rates that just went out – I did have the opportunity to talk with Mr. Jones yesterday.
