News Update!!: Needles, CA: Work continues on the new Dollar General store and on the search for a new grocery store.
Work continues on a hilltop property where a new Dollar General store will be build off of Hospitality Lane and J Street in Needles California.
Large amounts of dirt is being moved on dump trucks from the property on the hillside – to be lowed for the building, parking lot area, and driveway – and be dumped in a dirt lot across J Street next to Motel 6 for a future construction site.
Phillips Construction and Excavating Company is doing the hard work of clearing the property and removing the dirt for the new Dollar General store.
Residents are asking what is the latest information on the new Dollar General store, including what’s the estimated completion date.
Needles City Manager Rick Daniels tells ZachNews that, “they haven’t shared that with us. I would expect within 4 months the construction will be completed. We have issued all necessary permits.”
As for if there would be a ribbon cutting when the new Dollar General store is completed, Needles City Manager Rick Daniels tells ZachNews that, “They haven’t shared their plans with us. It is normal and customary to do so. In a community in which I worked before every new store had a ribbon cutting because it gave them free advertising and brought people to the store.”
As work on the new Dollar General store property continues, the search for a new grocery store continues.
Needles City Manager Rick Daniels tells ZachNews that, “We continue to contact every grocery on a regular basis. The grocery industry has universally and consistently told us that they need at least 10,000 people within 10 miles and no other store within 15. That must be why Bash’s left was because there wasn’t enough business. I don’t know, it is just speculation. We do know this; If it was profitable Bash’s would have stayed and/or another store would locate here. It is not for lack of effort.”
A grocery store getting talked about a lot in and around the community of Needles, California is named ALDI supermarket company.
Needles City Manager Rick Daniels tells ZachNews that, “We have had numerous conversations with ALDI over the last 2 years. In every case it has been that they would love to be in every community in the country, but right now their highest priority areas are more urban and they desire to locate next to or near a Trader Joes which they also own in order to deliver products to both sites most efficiently. There are areas that better meet their business plan.”
Recently, Needles City Manager Rick Daniels went to see what the ALDI supermarket looks like and took those pictures obtained by ZachNews of the ALDI supermarket in La Quinta, California.
Needles City Manager Rick Daniels tells ZachNews that, “As you know, I visited one of their new stores last week in La Quinta with a population of 40,000 and a regional population of 750,000 whereas Needles is 4000 with a Colorado River regional population of 175,000.”

Question: What is ALDI?
Answer: ALDI, the nation’s leading low-price grocer, operates over 1,500 stores in 33 states. We take a simple, cost-effective approach to grocery shopping that fundamentally saves shoppers on their grocery bills. In fact, smart shoppers have found that switching from national brands to ALDI exclusive brands can save them up to 50 percent* on more than 1,300 of the most commonly purchased grocery items. More than 32 million customers each month benefit from the ALDI streamlined approach, bringing shoppers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices every day.
Question: Does ALDI carry brand names?
Answer: Shoppers will find that more than 90 percent of the products in our stores are ALDI exclusive brands. ALDI exclusive brands allow us to provide the same high-quality product without passing on all of the hidden costs associated with the national brands, such as marketing and advertising. Recently, we have added a limited selection of national brands in addition to our ALDI exclusive brands. We made this decision in response to feedback from our customers, who have strong brand preferences, yet would like to complete more of their grocery shopping at ALDI. We also may carry a national brand if we are not able to procure an exclusive brand product that meets or exceeds the quality and taste of the national brand.
Question: If you don’t have the brands I know, how can I be sure of the quality?
Answer: ALDI exclusive brands are manufactured by many of the nation’s leading food producers, and we work closely with suppliers to ensure that ALDI exclusive brands meet or exceed the quality of national name brands. Additionally, we use the ALDI Test Kitchen to ensure that our products meet or exceed the quality and taste of national name brands. But the best testament to our quality is our customers and our growth: people would not keep coming back and we wouldn’t be growing the way we are if we didn’t have exceptional, premium products.
Question: How much of my weekly shopping can I do at ALDI?
Answer: Customers can find the majority of their average weekly shopping list at ALDI, including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items. Visit our Grocery & Home section to learn more.
Question: Why do I need a quarter to use a shopping cart at ALDI?
Answer: The shopping cart rental system is one of many ALDI efficiencies that enable us to keep our prices so low. New customers may be surprised by the simple, yet innovative, cart rental system, and usually come to appreciate its many benefits. Not only do customers get their deposit back, there are no stray carts taking up space in the parking lot or causing dents to cars. By not having to hire someone to police the shopping carts, we are able to pass the savings on to our customers.
Question: Why do you charge for shopping bags?
Answer: At ALDI, we believe in bringing our customers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices through a number of operational savings. Given our simple approach to retailing, one of the ways we help our customers save money is by encouraging them to bring their own shopping bags or to purchase a reusable, long-lasting ALDI bag. The end result is that we not only save our customers money – by avoiding adding the cost of the bag to our prices – but also precious resources.
Question: Can I arrange a large purchase for an event?
Answer: Please feel free to speak with the manager of your local ALDI store to discuss bulk purchasing. If bulk purchasing is available, the manager will be able to assist with your order and arrange for pick up and payment. For additional information about shopping at ALDI, please view New to ALDI?.
Question: Can I resell ALDI products in my store?
Answer: ALDI is not a wholesaler. All products we sell are intended for our customers’ personal use and are not to be resold. *Based upon a price comparison of comparable products sold at leading national competitors.

Well the City of Needles works to get a grocery store, some residents have been using social media and emails to send messages to grocery stores, including ALDI supermarket company, asking them all to please build their grocery store in their community.
It will be 2 years next month since Bashas’ Grocery Store closed up their grocery store on Friday, May 9th, 2014 and many people hope that some supermarket company will take a chance on our community and build a new supermarket.
