“23 years ago, I was… I developed adult onset juvenile diabetes Type 1. With the support of my wife who’s with me here tonight, followed a diet, did everything I should, took my shots. Nonetheless 2001, my kidneys failed. I had to go on dialysis, was listed for a kidney transplant. After a couple of years of dialysis, I was… there was deep decline. I should underscore that a decease owner these days waits about 10 years. After 2 years, I was in really bad shape. My brother – who lived out of state at the time – volunteered to be my donor. April 6, 2004 – this last month – makes 12 years. My little brother saved my life. I wish I can say that was the end of the story, but it was still not enough, and that year 2004, my diabetes became very erratic and I end up be hospitalized, and was listed for a pancreas transplant. After 14 months on the transplant list, I received that call that every transplant candidate hopes to receive. You’re very happy to have the promise of a better life, but you’re also very sensitive of the fact that the family and loved ones out there who are very hurting. A young lady named Laci – 16 years old – was in a car accident. She registered to become a donor. I know her story because I’ve been blessed with your family. Because now I have a pancreas that produce insulin, I am not a diabetic. If I can share… since last year, I’ve celebrated 26 years of marriage. We saw our daughter graduated from college and our son graduated from high school; that’s only because of heroism because somebody I knew his entire life and also a random stranger,” said Mr. Dave Hollon.
According to the OneLegacy website, OneLegacy saves and heals lives through organ, eye and tissue donation, comforts the families we serve, and inspires our communities to Donate Life.
OneLegacy envisions a day when we fulfill the needs of donor families and all who require organ, cornea or tissue transplants for their health and well-being.
Donate Life America is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit alliance of national organizations and state teams across the United States committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation.
According to the Donate Life America website, currently, nearly 124,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants in the United States of America.
Transplantation is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of medicine. But despite continuing advances in medicine and technology, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation.
Transplantation gives hope to thousands of people with organ failure and provides many others with active and renewed lives.
