News Update!!: Kansas: Mass shooting across 2 communities.
ZachNews has the latest information regarding a mass shooting that occured across 2 communities in Kansas on Thursday, February 25th, 2016.
Authorities are saying that a man, armed with a long gun and a pistol, drove through Newton, Kansas and Hesston, Kansas shooting at people before storming the Excel Industries in Hesston, Kansas where the man began shooting at his co-workers.
According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, at least 3 people are dead and 14 people were injured.
The injured people where transported to local hospitals where their conditions were ranging from critical to stable condition.
The mass shooting started at around 4:00pm CT and lasted just 26 minutes before the shooter was shot and killed.
NBC News is reporting that the shooter is identified as 38 year old Cedric Larry Ford and authorities are saying that the shooter was an employee at Excel Industries.
According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office T. Walton, the shooting started at 12th Street and Meridian Road in Newton, Kansas where 2 people were shot at while driving their vehicles injuring a person.
The shooter then continued north on Highway 81 where the shooter shot another person in the leg.
“There was a report of a stolen vehicle. That vehicle was the person that got shot. The shooter took that video and went on into Excel Industries. Once he got to Excel Industries, he shot a person in the parking lot and he entered into the building itself. Inside the building he shot a total of 15 people. Four were killed including himself, the shooter,” said Harvey County Sheriff’s Office T. Walton.
Authorities are working to identify all victims and notify family members.
According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office T. Walton, authorities confronted the shooter and gunfire was exchanged between authorities and the shooter, and that’s when the shooter was killed.
A couple of hours later, Newton Police Department and a SWAT team converged on a home in a trailer park in Newton, Kansas were the shooter was believed to have lived.
According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office T. Walton, the shooter’s roommate was inside and refusing to engage with authorities.
NBC affiliate KSN Channel 3 is reporting that when authorities obtained a warrant and returned at 10:00pm CT, they found the property empty.
According to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office T. Walton, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene, but terrorism wasn’t suspected.
Excel Industries manufactures lawn care products including riding lawnmowers and the business has been in Hesston, Kansas since the early 1960’s.
Excel Industries will be closed on Friday, February 26th, 2016.
