Phelan, CA: Traffic collision with extrication.
According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, at around 9:30pm PT on Monday, February 15th, 2016, the San Bernardino County Fire Department received reports of a traffic collision with extrication at the intersection of Duncan Road and Johnson Road in the community of Phelan, California.
Medic Engine 10 arrived several minutes after dispatch and reported two vehicles with major damage and one person still trapped in a small pickup truck. Due to the complexity of the extrication San Bernardino County Fire Department utilized its Urban Search and Rescue unit from Fire Station 40 in Oak Hills, California.
Rescue 40 along with Medic Engine 10 worked for approximately 40 minutes to free the driver from wreckage. Once extricated the patient was treated by San Bernardino County Fire Department paramedics and transported to nearby landing zone and care was transferred to an awaiting Mercy Air helicopter crew.
Due to the severity of injuries this patient required transport to an out of area trauma hospital.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded with 3 paramedic engine companies, 1 heavy rescue unit, 1 paramedic ambulance and 1 battalion chief for a total of 15 personnel.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Fortunately this patient was seat belted at the time of the collision, which without a doubt saved him from more serious injuries.
