Apple Valley, CA: Sheriff’s Aviation Air Rescue Crews help locate and hoist rescue an injured hiker in Deep Creek.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, on Sunday, November 15th, 2015, 29 year old Travis Hughes of Rancho Cucamonga, California was in the Bowen Ranch area of Deep Creek in Apple Valley, California when he began suffering from a medical condition.

Travis Hughes was unable to walk and after some time, began suffering from hypothermia.

Other hikers in the area called 911 and requested assistance for Travis Hughes.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation 40King1, with a crew of Deputies Jon Roberg and Carlos Quezada, responded in an attempt to locate Travis Hughes.

After a brief search, the crew located Travis Hughes and determined he would need to be hoist rescued due to his condition and the remote area.

Travis Hughes was also in mountain terrain.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Air Rescue06, with a crew of Pilot Corporal Mike Gilley, Air Medic Crew Chief Wayne Hess, and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Air Medics Dr. Robert Katzer and Paramedic Bernie Horak, responded to the scene and arrived at approximately 4:40pm PT.

As Pilot Corporal Mike Gilley hovered the aircraft over the victim, Air Medic Crew Chief Wayne Hess lowered Air Medics Dr. Robert Katzer and Paramedic Bernie Horak to Travis Hughes with the use of the hoist.

Air Medics Dr. Robert Katzer and Paramedic Bernie Horak placed Travis Hughes into a litter and Air Medic Crew Chief Wayne Hess hoisted him into the helicopter.

Air Medic Crew Chief Wayne Hess hoisted Air Medics Dr. Robert Katzer and Paramedic Bernie Horak back into the helicopter, and the crew transported Travis Hughes to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.
