Ontario, CA: Driver arrested in fatal traffic collision that killed a San Bernardino Police Department Officer.

The San Bernardino Police Department is mourning the loss of a 12 year veteran San Bernardino Police Department Officer who died in a traffic collision by a driver under the influence.

According to the Ontario Police Department, at approximately 2:14am PT on November 5th, 2015, 40 year old Bryce Hanes, an on-duty San Bernardino Police Department Officer and a resident of Redlands, California, had just left the West Valley Detention Center after booking in a prisoner.

San Bernardino Police Department Officer Bryce Hanes was on his way back to San Bernardino, California in a marked black and white patrol vehicle.

As he drove southbound on Etiwanda Avenue, he entered the intersection on a green light at Fourth Street near Ontario, California.

The suspect, 27 year old Archie Green III of Fontana, California, was traveling eastbound on Fourth Street and failed to stop at the red traffic signal.

The front end of Archie Green III’s 2008 dark blue, Dodge Charger collided into the passenger side of the patrol vehicle.

After being struck, the patrol car spun out of control colliding with a traffic signal.

The suspect’s vehicle drove off the roadway and over a dirt embankment where it came to rest in a dirt field.

San Bernardino Police Department Officer Bryce Hanes was transported to Kaiser Hospital in Fontana, California where he died from his injuries.

San Bernardino Police Department Officer Bryce Hanes is a 12 year veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department, graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1993, and leaves behind his wife and 3 children.

Archie Green III was transported to a local area hospital via ambulance where he was treated for minor injuries.

Following treatment he was transported to the Ontario Police Department Station for questioning.

Based on information received in the preliminary investigation, Archie Green III was arrested, transported to West Valley Detention Center, and was booked on the charges of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol while Causing Fatal Injuries.

California Governor Jerry Brown ordered Capitol flags flown at half-staff in Hanes’ honor.

“We join all Californians in mourning his loss and vow to always remember his selfless service and sacrifice on behalf of his community,” said California Governor Jerry Brown.

The Ontario Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic collision.
