News Update!!: Devore, CA: Latest information on police pursuit crash and officer involved shooting on Interstate 215.

** As of 6:00pm PT on Saturday, September 19th, 2015: **

– According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Coroner’s Office, the suspect in the police pursuit was identified as 32 year old Nicholas Alan Johnson of Fontana, California.

Since the police pursuit shooting from a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, some drivers questioned authorities’ decision to shoot from their helicopter.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, all of their deputies and tactical flight officers have been actively training from the air since the mid 1980’s, and this is the seventh shooting from a helicopter since 2001 in Apple Valley, California.

– More information on the police pursuit was released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Press Release, “On Friday, September 18, 2015, deputies from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division were attempting to take a home invasion robbery suspect into custody, when a pursuit was initiated that ended on the northbound 215 freeway. The home invasion occurred in Devore on Thursday, September 17th. Deputies identified the suspect driving a beige Tahoe and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated at approximately 12:49 p.m. The pursuit continued through Fontana and San Bernardino, reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour with the suspect running several stop signs and red lights, narrowly missing several pedestrians. The suspect then entered the northbound 215 freeway traveling southbound at a high rate of speed into oncoming traffic continuing to jeopardize the safety of the public. A deputy from the Sheriff’s Aviation Division fired at the suspect’s vehicle, striking it several times. The suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran a few yards before collapsing on the side of the roadway.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Press Release continued saying, “The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect was struck by gunfire prior to jumping out of the moving vehicle. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.”

– According to California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 8, all northbound lanes of Interstate 215 in Devore, California is reopened as of 7:00am PT on Saturday, September 19th, 2015.

In regards to the vehicle crash that happened at the end of the police pursuit, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect vehicle continued moving forward and collided with an uninvolved blue SUV.

There were 3 occupants in the vehicle who received injuries and were transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

The adult male and 13 year old juvenile male were treated and released from the hospital.

The adult female remains hospitalized and is recovering from her injuries.

The adult female reportedly underwent surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California.

Investigators say it’s rare for San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies to shoot from their helicopter, but San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies are trained to do so, including when a suspect poses a threat to public safety.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and officer involved shooting.

Authorities are hoping to have all lanes of northbound Interstate 215 open by morning on Saturday, September 19th, 2015.

Traffic is being detoured around the closure onto side streets and onto Interstate 15 which are also jammed up with traffic as people are heading home or heading out to their weekend destinations.

All lanes of northbound Interstate 215 in Devore, California is closed after a police pursuit ends in a crash and an officer involved shooting.

The police pursuit began at around 1:00pm PT on Friday, September 18th, 2015 in Fontana, California.

According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Olivia Bozek, authorities initially tried to pull over a suspect involved in a home invasion and was under surveillance by a special enforcement team.

The suspect refused to pull over and led authorities on a police pursuit reaching speeds as high as 100 mph.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Olivia Bozek, the suspect vehicle drove southbound along the northbound lanes of Interstate 215.

As the suspect bailed out of the vehicle on the wrong side of the interstate, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into another oncoming vehicle on northbound Interstate 215 at the Little League Drive overpass.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect was shot by a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Helicopter and the suspect later died.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Helicopter was following the suspect during the police pursuit.

Bullet holes can be seen on the driver side of the suspect’s vehicle’s front window.

At least 3 people inside the other vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

The crash on northbound Interstate 215 at the Little League Drive overpass has closed all lanes of northbound Interstate 215 at Palm Avenue in Devore, California and traffic is backed up to Interstate 210.

As the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not given an estimate on how long northbound Interstate 215 would be closed.
