News Alert!!: San Bernardino, CA: Prosecutors expected to announce if criminal charges will be filed against San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies in beating video.
Prosecutors are expected to announce at a joint news conference on Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 if any criminal charges will be filed against the 10 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies seen beating a suspect after a horse police pursuit in April 2015.
The joint news conference will start at at 11:00am PT at the San Bernardino Superior Court located at 303 West 3rd Street in San Bernardino, California.
In a press release from Public Affairs Officer Christopher Lee, San Bernardino County’s District Attorney Michael Ramos and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department John McMahon will be at this joint news conference, and have has reached a filing decision in the officer-involved use of force incident involving 30 year old Francis Jared Pusok.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department submitted the results of its investigation in this case to the San Bernardino County’s District Attorney in August 2015.
On Thursday, April 9th, 2015, the nearly 3 hour police pursuit in northeast of San Bernardino County, California began when authorities tried to serve a warrant in an Apple Valley, California identity theft investigation.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies pursued Francis Jared Pusok in a vehicle.
Francis Jared Pusok would later abandoned the vehicle and stolen a horse leading to a horse police pursuit.
A news helicopter crew and their camera from NBC affiliate KNBC Channel 4 was overhead in News Chopper 4 when Francis Jared Pusok was seen falling off from the horse in rugged terrain.
At least 10 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies were seen surrounding Francis Jared Pusok then were seen repeatedly punching and kicking Francis Jared Pusok as he lay on the ground.
According to NBC affiliate KNBC Channel 4, Francis Jared Pusok appeared to have been kicked 17 times, punched 37 times and struck with batons 4 times, a review of the video showed, and 13 blows appeared to be to the head.
At least 10 San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies were put on administrative leave a day after the confrontation, and San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors reached a $650,000 settlement with Francis Jared Pusok.
According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department John McMahon, the arrest appeared to be an “excessive” use of force.
According to NBC affiliate KNBC Channel 4, Francis Jared Pusok said he fled in fear due to previous encounters with law enforcement. He has been charged with 14 felony and misdemeanor counts.
