Highland, CA: Teenager shot by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy following family dispute.

A 16 year old teenager underwent surgery Sunday after being shot by a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy following a family dispute.

At around 10:30pm PT on Saturday, January 19th, 2014, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies responded to the 7400 block of Rogers Lane in Highland, California.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, then San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies arrived to the incident, the teenager was outside and as San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies pulled up next to him, the teenager allegedly approached them with a hammer and a sharp object, and attempted to attack one of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, 16 year old was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital were he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The identified of the 16 year old teenager was later by the mother as Joshua Alvarez.

Family members of Joshua Alvarez say they wish San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies would have taken a different approach.

Sunday night, the Joshua Alvarez’s friends and relatives gathered together to hold a vigil and march demanding an independent investigation of the shooting and a change in policies on the use of lethal force by law enforcement.

“No justice, no peace” the group of more than 50 people chanted during the march.

Joshua Alvarez’s Brother Augustine Alvarez, was at the vigil and said, “I wish I would have talked it out with him instead of argued with him.”

Augustine Alvarez was in the argument with his brother Joshua Alvarez when the authorities were called.

Joshua Alvarez’s cousin, Vanessa Camacho was also at the vigil said that Joshua Alvarez loves his brother, his sister, his mom, his dad, his cousins, and everybody and said over a megaphone, “He is a good little boy, he is a kid.”

Some in the crowd wonder why didn’t San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies use a taser guns on the teenager rather than shooting the teenager.

No San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies were injured in the incident and the incident is reportedly under investigation.

Friends and family members planned to rally at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Monday afternoon to call for an independent investigation on the shooting and asking for cameras to be worn by all San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputies.
