Havasu Lake, CA: Expansion of voting rights at Chemehuevi Indian Tribe.
The results of a secretarial election giving voting rights to Chemehuevi Indian Tribe members of one thirty second blood quantum was released last Friday, October 25th, 2013 by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (B.I.A.) office in Parker, Arizona.
The deadline for voting was Monday, October 7th, 2013, but due to the United States Government Shutdown, the vote tally was delayed until last Friday.
The results came as a surprise to many tribe members who had struggled for years with the issue of a large subclass of tribe members denied the right to vote.
In the development of this secretarial election, tribe government was able to strike from the secretarial election wording allowing the right to hold office by tribe members of this huge new voting block.
This is a huge development in the history of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe.
