Needles, CA: Suspects arrested in 1991 cold case murder in Needles, California.
An arrest of a suspect was made in a 1991 cold case murder that took place in Needles, California.
According to a press release form the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday, September 16th, 1991 at about 10:00am PT., a passing motorist saw a vehicle stopped in the desert about 100 feet south of Interstate 40, at the United State Highway 95 off-ramp. 35 year old Scott Sprague of Santa Cruz, California was found deceased from multiple gunshot wounds, in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.
In November of 2012, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homicide Cold Case Team reopened the 1991 investigation.
On Wednesday, February 20th, 2013, the Cold Case Team traveled to Orlando, Florida, and interviewed Jeffrey Campbell. After further investigation, Investigators obtained arrest warrants for 49 year old Jeffrey Allen Campbell of Orlando, Florida (28 year old at the time) and 54 year old Richard Eric Williamson of Las Vegas, Nevada (33 year old at the time).
Jeffrey Allen Campbell was arrested by Orlando Police Officers was extradited to San Bernardino on Sunday, March 10, 2013.
On Tuesday, April 30th, 2013, the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division, in cooperation with the US Marshal’s Office located and arrested Richard Eric Williamson in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against Jeffrey Allen Campbell and Richard Eric Williamson. Williamson is awaiting extradition from Nevada.
The Sheriff’s Cold Case Team is funded in part through a $500,000 “Solving Cold Cases with DNA Grant” from the US Department of Justice.
The Cold Case Team consists of two Homicide Detectives and a Deputy District Attorney.
