Needles, CA: Needles took home top prize during the 2013 Dog Day at the Park in Needles, California.
Mary Gonzales and her dog “Whip It” took home the ‘Best In Show’ ribbon during the event held last Saturday at Jack Smith Park.
ZachNews talked to Mary Gonzales, Rich Gonzales, and their dog “Whip It” about the win as well as the plans for the new dog park in the works.
“It was great; this is our third year and this is the best it done and we are for the dog park in Needles now,” said Mary Gonzales.
About the new dog park; Mary Gonzales said, “It’s in the beginning stages. We gone to Havasu (Lake Havasu City, Arizona) and looked at their 3, and we gone to Bullhead (Bullhead City, Arizona) and they have beautiful park and we want one just as pretty.”
In regards to what was the costume the ‘Best In Show’ winner was wearing; Mary Gonzales said, “A year ago, it was a cow costume, but the utters came off and now it’s a dog costume.”
Money raised at event went to help the Needles Animal Shelter as well as to help in building a new dog park.
A 50/50 drawing as well as a silent auction was held at the event with prizes from great and caring businesses throughout the Colorado River Tri-State area.
Dance Trax 51 sold sweet treats and performed entertaining both the crowd and their pets.
Investigator watch dog ‘Chopper’ and ‘Don’t Start Me Talking’ radio host Dave Hayes was there at the KTOX 1340 AM’s Booth enjoying both the beautiful day at the park.
Delicious food was provided by great and tasty vendors; Munchy’s Mexican Restaurant served pork chili verde plates and their famous breakfast burritos; Colorado River Medical Center served hot dogs, chili dogs, and Frito Pies; and the American Legion Post 127 served barbecue sandwiches.
Both people and dogs enjoyed the vendors offered at the event from Doggy Styles Grooming and Pet Boarding; Tri State Athletic Club; Niki’s Pals and Paws; and Rona Philpott Photographys.
Needles High School Students sold cold and refreshing soft drinks for fundraising which was very welcoming as it was a very hot Saturday at the park.
Those who attended the event jumped into the cool Colorado River well enjoying dogs from the Lake Havasu Hot Dog Disc Club and Las Vegas Dock Dogs perform jumps off the boat launching dock.
This year’s event was the third year and had less people then last year, but the event brought the community and their dogs together for a day at the park along the Colorado River and hope that those who came out to the event will come back to enjoy the new dog park when it’s done which the new dog park will be located on Hospitality Lane off of J Street a cross the street from Days Inn and Suite.
