Breaking News: Needles, CA: Vegetation fire is burning along the California and Arizona sides of the Colorado River near Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Needles, California: Firefighters from multiple fire department agencies have responded to a vegetation fire burning along the California and Arizona sides of the Colorado River near Jack Smith Memorial Park.

The vegetation fire started at around 7:00 p.m. PT on Monday, August 13th, 2012 on the California side of the Colorado River just south of Jack Smith Memorial Park.

ZachNews Photojournalist Zachary Lopez was recording windy and stormy conditions when lightning strikes occurred just to the south of Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Soon after, smoke appeared in the area of the lightning strikes just south of the popular park along the Colorado River, and near the location of another vegetation fire that occurred back on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Colorado River Station, the flames from the vegetation fire has jumped from the California side to the Arizona side of the Colorado River near Jack Smith Memorial Park.

Residents living at the Verde Shores Estates and visitors to Jack Smith Memorial Park were evacuated to safety in case the vegetation fire moved towards the residential area to the west of the park.

Firefighters from multiple fire department agencies, including San Bernardino County Fire Department and Mohave Valley Fire Department, have responded to the vegetation fire and continue to battle the flames.

River Road from Marina Drive to Jack Smith Memorial Park as well as Dike Road south of the intersection of Riverfront Parkway and South Lake Drive is closed to all motorists due to the vegetation fire.

As of 11:59 p.m. PT, firefighters from throughout the area have responded to the vegetation fire, and so far no reports on any structures damaged or anybody injured related to the vegetation fire.
